Must be Saturday morning...

Curious if anyone has ever heard of it happening, etc., with cross-species breeding? If you have ever heard of this happening. Resulted in: (a) actual penetration, or (b) actual offspring happening?

 :?:

Bill, what species are we discussing here?

One of my customers called me to brag on the bull I sold him. He said the calves were good, and the bull was doing a good job taking care of his cows, but added that he had also tried to breed his mare. I don't know how successful he was in his attempt, but I've certainly never heard of such a mating before, let alone one that produced offspring.

Would the mule be considered to be the cross between two species? I would say they have to be similar animals. I guess the beefalo is in that category as well. I believe there have been successful matings between sheep and goats, whether they were test tube matings or not I do not remember. Wolves, coyotes, and dogs can interbreed, and I think that wildcats sometimes cross with domestic cats.

I saw a Liger (LionXTiger) on TV a while back. He was huge. The attendent said it was an accidental mating. I can't remember what he called them when it was a TigerXLion cross. The offspring of across-species breeding are often sterile.

Saw one of these at a wildlife refuge near Eureka Springs, Ark.

it depends on how close the two species are. if they have a close number of chromosomes it can work and the offspring can be viable (although usually sterile). thats why all the crosses mentioned in this thread work. but for instance a cat and dog couldnt reproduce b/c their chromosome numbers are so different, the mating wouldnt result in viable offspring. okay maybe a better example would be a dog and a goat. penetration- possibly, offspring- negative.

I saw a picture posted on the internet a few years ago, the heading was " The World's worst coon dog". It showed a picture of big racoon  "riding" on a beagle  and the dog was just standing there.

So I guess there could be penetration, but I doubt any conception.

What exactly was the point of that link? There is nothing on it about Pixie Bob's. :?: :?: :?:

So people can see some cross species animals. Sorry, it wasn't in response to the pixie bob post. Maybe some one will find it interesting. ;-)

My apologies. As it followed my question, I naturally thought it was an answer. Yet another example of my faulty logic processes! It was informative, and interesting. :) I guess I'm just cranky tonight. Sorry.

mscamp - you sure seem cranky a lot

What I don't understand is that when you cross the male of species A with the female of species B you get a different animal then if you would have crossed the male of species B with the female of species A. I would think that would be the same either way around.

Not a problem.

Thanks, Todd. We've had better than two weeks of overcast, cloudy, grey, depressing weather. The rain is wonderful (got another 3 inches yesterday), but I don't do well with overcast. I tend to get cranky and irritable. I'm not posting this as an excuse, simply an explanation. I really appreciate your willingness to forgive.
