I've attempted to make liquid creosote from the cresoste that builds up in chimneys and on the outdoor wood burners. I've never found anything that will disolve the stuff. Anybody got any ideas?

I always thought that the old...really old...method of perservation...cresolte, came from a desert bush and the build up in the chimney is carbon residue with unburned VOCs. Know it will sure burn. Dmc

No idea how to dissolve it, but if you can get a whole lot of old diesel oil and you "cook" your posts in it for about 10 minutes it has about the same effect.

I made up some homemade creosote and did mine. 5Gal. diesel,5gal used diesel oil, 5 gal foundation tar and 2 lbs salt. Salt did'nt mix at all don't know what it's for but was in the recipe I found. If I had to do it again I would probably use 10 gal. of tar. I coated mine 2 or 3 times over a couple of days. Only time will tell how good it works.
