Any ideas on what might be wrong with our cow...she had her first calf about 7 weeks ago and has been in fine health. She is about 2 1/2 years old. She had been coming in the barn to be milked morning and night no problem. All of a sudden, Saturday night she acted spooked and wouldn't come to us or the barn, even for grain. She walks real slow, stays away from the other cows and is not too interested in eating. She lays down some, but gets up again. At first we thought grass tetany, but finally got the vet here and her blood had normal levels of magnesium and calcium. She is ruminating, her heart sounded normal, temperature normal. We have been managing to get her in once a day to milk, but she's so tough to get in now that we don't have time to chase her at 4:30am before we go to our day jobs. (she will break into a run if we try to herd her to the barn). She often stands at the bottom of the pasture by herself. Yesterday she laid down in her stantion in the barn and we didn't think she'd get up again. We've given her electrolytes and she is still eating and milking, but both are reduced from normal. She just acts weird. Any ideas?

It seems that if your giving her electrolytes she has diarrhea. But does she?
Is she breathing alright, no coughing or wheezing?
It certainly doesn't sound like grass tetany, I was thinking more along the lines of Johne's Disease but I hope I'm wrong. Could also be a case of Listerosis.
May be best to isolate her and hit her with some LA200...see how she does.

What about calling your vet? He/she would probably be much more effective at diagnosing this problem. ;-)
