I have a cow due with her second calf on 3/25. She looks ready right now. I was wondering. I know exactly the day she was bred in the pasture. Using the gestation tables I arrived at the due day. How much variation is there in due dates?

We AI'd a cow on a specific date. At the time we did not own a bull. She went 3 weeks past her calculated due date and calved a healthy (big) heifer.

I've seen anything from 6 weeks early to 19 days late. The 6 weeks early is almost always twins or dead or both.

I found that in my herd, 285 plus or minus 7 will get 98% of them... I also subtract about 2-3 days for first calvers, adding a day per year of age.. Bull calves I've found are typically 3 days or so later than a heifer... and that gestation times are hereditary... Some cows will always be early, and their daughters usually will be too, and vice versa.

My old cow is due on the same day as yours... I'm expecting her a week later though

Made a midnight check. In the rays of the flashlight, the eyes of the calf reflected back to me. A new life outside the womb has begun. I did not bother them, the newborn chores can wait a few hours. This simangus heifer is a full ranking cow now - her second calf. Calf was due 3/25 so it is three days early. I get a rush of joy on these occasions, life is pretty cool. :D
