Things seemed to going good. Had weaned some calves.
Kept them in a barn shed for a few days and then turned them out into a lot for another few days, 10-12 days total, to make sure they were past the bawling and fence walking stage as well as transitioning to some feed. One morning I fed them and everything looked fine, proceeded to turn them out into a probably 20 some acre pasture. That evening came up one short. Found him sunny side up, had likely been dead a while the way he he was swollen.
The only thing I can think of is complications from banding, but that had been a couple months prior and I used a tetanus vaccine.
Also I thought of the possibility he might have eaten some hemlock. It's been another couple weeks since and the rest seem fine.
Then the other day we found Maybell's two year old first calf heifer daughter stuck in the mud of spring at the edge of a pond. Pulled her out but she couldn't stand. Tried lifting her up with a strap and tractor loader but she was too weak in both front and back legs.
I'd seen her a weeks before go down when the bull mounted. She went down awkwardly but got up right after.
She had been in heat again, I figure maybe the bull was with her when she got down in the mud.
She has an almost 3 month old heifer calf that we now have up and on feed.
Put the cow down today, she had been down, since Saturday.
