Is anyone still using corn cribs? Apparently they are coming back in some segments due to drying costs.

I would be interested in knowing the process. How do you load/unload the cribs - you know, all the details!

Apparently pickers are getting hard to find too.

Appreciate any info.

We still use cribs and never buy propane. Used metal cribs are pretty cheap. Lots of used corn picker around here also but most of them are junk. Handling cob corn is more work than grain but the additional fiber is a benifit for grazing cattle.

We use corn cribs also. We usually have between 15 to 20 acres in corn, and we have (2... don't ask) 2 row narrow corn pickers. We can usually pick the corn, haul in gravity boxes, unload with an elevator into the cribs, using 2 to 3 gravity boxes and pending weather and breakdowns have it done in 2 to 3 long working days.

We just got ours all done this weekend, 18.8% average moisture content. And with the bad weather patterns this summer we still ended up with 129bu per acre. So we were pretty happy with the outcome.

You are guessing that it yielded 129 bushels per acre. And until you shell it, and weigh it, and then factor in the shrink you will still be only guessing.

You are correct, except I won't be shelling it, and I factored in shrink, but yes it is still only a guess.

Now just how did you factor in the shrink when you never had a weight to shrink. You must have somehow shrunk your guess.

I was thinking just 10 acres Michele and that is just the kind of info I need.

How do you unload the cribs, and do you grind or mill the cobs before feeding?

Thanks again.

The cribs have a gate like system on the bottom, we back up a mixer/mill and that has it's own auger on it to feed it into the mill. We grind the whole cob, and then there is another auger system on it, that we add any supplements, minerals, oats, soybean meal etc. After the load is done, we back up to a steer stuffer and the mill has another auger on it to remove the mix into the stuffer. The whole process takes about an hour a load. A bit more time gets added on when you end up at the bottom of the cribs and gravity flow doesn't get the cobs into the auger and you have to shovel.

If you like I will take some pics for you this weekend of the cribs, picker and mixer if you would like. Just let me know.

If it isn't a great deal of trouble that would be very much appreciated.( The gates on the cribs would be most interesting ). :D
