I hate messing with trailer wiring, seems like it’s Murphy’s law times 10 on old trailers.
I spent yesterday converting every trailer on this place to 7 pin RV plug .
Had to order the bed connector that will just plug into your vehicles wiring and surprisingly for a 02 Ford there are still out there.
It was getting where no one around here carried the six pin plugs anymore.
All the new boats and trailers are coming with 7 pin like all the new trucks.

Neighbor has one, a Ford eating his lunch. Ask to borrow my 26’ to move a small dozer. He said brakes on his brothers trailer weren’t working.
He called me told me mine weren’t working, I said your truck is not working! Went down hooked it up brakes locked up as they were supposed to.
Told him the way I saw it was go back to Ford or put in an after market that works.
 
I believe there is a wire that hooks to a different terminal on Ford than others. We have one Ford
Two Chevy's, three dodge, and two Toyotas.
Ford pretty much stays hooked to the dump trailer and I know my son had to switch a wire in the 7 pin.
Trailer lights and tires are a constant problem.
I've hired a guy to redo 6 trailers and get everything working with everything that we have that will pull that trailer. All connections soldered and everything in conduit as close to the lights as possible. Everything put up to resist brush from catching wire's. It ain't gonna be cheap, but if it goes well I'm hoping it'll pay me back in wasted time and frustration.
 
On my Ford 02 it came with a 7 pin (tow package) and 4 pin and in one of the tag light holes I mounted a 6 pin connector (I wired to the 7 pin). So far everything I have backed up to has worked. I have owned a Featherlite, W & W, Gooseneck, Load trail and a old UHal that was wrecked and rebuilt. They all worked with out modifications.

My 02 worked on everything as well.

so I decided to put one in the bed of the truck and convert the others to one plug.

I have our cattle trailer at a place doing the same thing.

The new trucks sense shorts, bad grounds, or any other disruption in the truck or trailer wiring. GM has two boards ($400ea) that link to the computer from the wiring harness.

These trailer mfgs are going to have to step it up for the new trucks. Those bs connection you crimp around one wire to splice another in are not going to cut it.

You dang near want to go buy just a primed metal trailer from these mfgs. No wiring, no floor, no paint, no tires and wheels. You show up with good tires and wheels so you can take it home and paint it, wire it, and put a good floor in it. You pay for all their junk and have to redo it all in a couple years. :bang:
 
I've never had much luck with the 7 pin connectors, so I cut the plug off of every trailer I buy as soon as I get home and wire the old 6 pin plug on it. I do put a 6 and 7 way receptacle on the back of every truck, along with another 6 way in the headboard - just in case I have to pull someone else's trailer with a 7 way.

And that’s a fact Brute. I purchased a Gatormade gooseneck earlier this summer. Only reason I bought it was because the previous owner did a complete rewire (and used heat shrink connectors) and he put brand new tires on it. Trailer was 2 years old and he already had issues with both. I feel like it was worth more than new because he fixed all the problems except the garbage paint! He also put on one of those diagnostic plugs which are awesome!
