Confused

Help Support CattleToday:

I'm willing to try, but you have to give me some details on what you are confused about.

Here is an example:

Steers: Medium and Large 1: Individual 230 lbs 182.50; individual 310 lbs
155.00; 400-500 lbs 126.00-134.00; 500-600 lbs 109.00-117.00; 600-700 lbs 96.00-
107.00; 700-800 lbs 101.00-108.00.

The numbers after the lbs. what does that mean.

The numbers after the pounds means the amount per cwt (100 lbs) that the animal sold for. An 800 lb animal selling for 101.00/100 lbs would bring 808.00.

Oh.. ok you think they would have found a better way of saying that. But thanks, That helps a lot.

By the way Matt.....

700-800 lbs. 101.00-108.00 means that at least one hd sold for 101.00 / cwt and at least one hd sold for 108.00 / cwt, and majority sold between those prices. If you have cattle in pretty decent shape, you should get at least the mid range price for them when you sell, in this case around 104.00-105.00 / cwt.

Not sure why, but whenever you buy, it always seems you are establishing the high price for the day, maybe it because no one wants to buy the lower end cows. Or at least most of us dont. Some folks buy the lower end cows, fill em up with groceries and make a decent profit from them. Not me....I buy them high, sell them low and pay the hauler to haul them to and from my place.

FWIW....when you see N/T next to a particular weight group, it means none tested...or no cattle that weight were sold that day. Usually occurs on very young calves or very large calves.

ive often wondered why they havent.

I don't put a whole lot of merit in the market reports. In almost every sale I've sold animals there's animals that come in on both sides of the numbers listed. I guess they figure out the averages somehow.

I agree with sidney411, I've been at sales and sure didn't remember the cattle that sold for the high end...probably cause ours were setting the low market price. Mostly in the middle...can you believe the prices...wish I was in the selling market instead of the buying, will have to wait until next month.
