I have 3 heifers due to have Composure calves this fall. That will be my first look at them. All three are simangus heifers. He has good CE numbers and still good growth. That is what I based my selection on. I focus on breeding all my heifers AI to CE angus bulls. I also use Top Hand.

Just used him today. AI guy was concerned however because they hadn't "slicked up" yet. He bred them anyway, but said there is a chance that they may not take. I guess I'll keep my "composure" and be on the watch for the next month. They calved in early May. AI guy suggested some "high phos" mineral. Any suggestions for next time?

I am using Vitafirm Concept Aid. They are consuming it at three times the rate of my previous mineral. Good mineral is a benefit to conception and overall health. My cattle were healthy before switching to Vitafirm but they seem like they have elevated their heath another notch.

Composure looks good on paper. My first Composure calf is due in October.

Where are you from? Most of our Galloway X Angus cross have slicked pretty well here in ND. Our full bloods haven't completely shed out yet, but all have already rebred.

I am in southeastern Washington state. Maybe slicked up was the wrong phrase. What he meant was that she(the cow) didn't have that clear mucus that he likes to see when a cow is in heat. He said that her cervix was "toned" like it should be, and the left side had a follicle on it. So he bred her anyway, but I am supposed to watch her closely for her next heat cycle to see if she settled. With fingers crossed.
