Commute

It does have it's little rewards doesn't it?
Saw a funny English farm related video last year (too many curse words to post here) but near the end, he said "5 o'clock in the morning, and I'm already where I work--while the rest of the poor sods are struggling in on the tube (subway) I'm going to go get some milk--out of a cow!"

(just do a search for "get in to farming")

It is one of those things I am looking forward to in retirement. Not that I have a long commute now. Especially compared to back when I was falling timber. Gosh we had some mighty long drives back then. But in 6 months, 1 day, 5 hours, and 57 minutes my commute will consist of getting out of bed in the morning.

Congrats on that. I'm a little over 3 years from retiring. Only drive about 12 minutes to work though.

I'm 14 miles door-to-door. Thankfully, it's mostly done in the back roads of the country so it's about 22 minutes. But when I get behind a slow-a$$ idiot I just about come unglued. I don't mind the farmers or the people that go the speed limit. It's that guy that feels the need to go 45 in a 55. Why do they do that? :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

I drive about 26 miles to work. It's all highway, but sometimes I get behind dump trucks hauling gravel. That can slow me down in a hurry. I try to leave early enough that I don't have to deal with too many other people on this particular stretch.

Sweet. Those that work off the farm here drive a long way to get good jobs. Makes a long day.

Must not be a lot of good jobs there Ron? I know that eastern ky/Appalachia has lot of long commutes like that.

Best I'm afraid I'm a,slow driver. Always have been. I will if not traveling near the speed limit try to let people around me. If I can safely do so. I won't move over however to let someone by if I'm driving the speed limit. And if they start trying to push me . We gonna go even slower. :D
In defense of us slow movers.
14 miles at 45mph = 18.66 minutes
14 miles at 55mph= 15.27 minutes
Surely 3 minutes isn't worth all that headbanging..... ;-)

The worse one I had was back in 1985. It was three hours each way. On the road two hours of 2 lane highway and an hour of logging road. Then it was a 20 minute hike down to the saw and 45 minutes to climb up out of the canyon at the end of the day. I left the house at 3:15 AM and got home sometime after 5:00 PM. Only 6 hours of actual timber falling in the middle. It took us about 4 or 5 months to get the timber in that canyon on the ground. I was sure glad when that job was over.

40 miles one way, but I can drive it in 45 minutes (not counting the stop for my daily breakfast taco) without exceeding the speed limit. I work 7:00am to 3:30pm, so that helps with traffic.

I'm with you Fence....and shoulders are not for passing anyway. They're for emergencies and HP will tell you that.

I've got IBS issues, so some days that 3 minutes is pretty important! I don't get too upset about it if they started out in front of me, but there's this thing here where people will pull out in front of you if they have just enough time even though there's no one behind you. Another thing that drives me up a wall are the folks that stay in the left lane on the interstate.

I only pass if it's safe, but usually I just grumble b/c it won't save me enough time. The only thing it does is make me look like an idiot when they're at the stop sign behind me.

I don't mind slow drivers. It's best that you dive at the speed you comfortable with. And they are easy to pass.

It's the fruit cakes that think they need to drive side by side on a 4 lane and can't either speed up enough to get in front of the guy they are going the same speed with, or let up for a fraction of second to get behind.

Those are the people I have a problem with.

As far as commute, I mostly have cross country driving. Luckily, not stuck in that stop and go stuff. Makes a big difference in my book.

I don't plan on retiring until they shove me out the door and lock it behind me. But who knows, that might change in time.

Have just under 3 years if I go to 66, to retire. I never drive the same amount 2 days in a row since being a milk tester and servicing 15-24 farms a month. The best thing is the morning tests when there aren't too many on the road at 3 am. The worst is the morning tests when the farmer thinks starting at 2:30 am is morning and I have to leave at 1:15 to be there on time and earlier if I have to set up meters to test with. Mostly I am coming home after the majority of the people are into work at 8-9 a.m.. But there's the going to an afternoon test at 2 p.m. or so and getting behind a school bus that stops at every driveway. Whatever happened to the kids going to a "bus-stop" at the end of a road every so often and the bus driver waving you around the bus before he let all the kids off so that there weren't 20 vehicles behind them?? I drive anywhere from 12 miles one way, to some farms that are 55 miles one way. 25 years and I am ready to "stay home" and just do our farm work; tired of the extra early mornings and the late nights on some farms that don't start til 4 pm and don't get done til 10 or 11 and then a long drive home.

I drive to fast when I travel, very rarely does anyone pass me. But as long as the slow pokes stay in the right lane I have no problems. I use to drive 82 miles each way every day for years.
