Some bulls we looked at yesterday, be honest about them as I have a hard time judging young bulls.
15949159 an 878 son

16104528 a younger 878 son not as wide as I like, a little more femine looking but his carcass numbers are better, not the best of pics

16104529 A Nichols Extra H6 son, I dislke the Precision blood back in him but like physical looks.

Whats the age on those guys? I personally do not like any of them....maybe the last one seems to be the best.

Ok. The first one would have been a nicer bull if his topline was more flat and not sway backed.
The second bull just doesn't have the muscle. I wouldn't get him.
If all I had to choose from are those 3 I would take the last bull. I'm not real crazy about him either, might be the small legs. Just something about him I just don't like.

Where's Frankie? I like to hear her thoughts.

If I was forced to use one of them it would be #3. I think you must continue to shop around, any breeder that didn't cull #2 isn't worth doing business with, #1 would also have ended up in the feedlot if he was born on my place.

I've decided that there's little value in judging bulls in this manner. Can you take someone with you to look at them? I can make any one of my bulls look bad in a picture. That said, I can make any bull look better too. I'd hate for you to pass up a good bull because of a bad picture. I'd also hate for someone to come to my place, take some rough shots of my cattle, and post them on a board and be accused of being a shoddy breeder from some amature photography. That said, someone shouldn't be considered a great breeder from professional photography.

20 months on the first one.

14 months on the other two.

I know I don't do any bovine justice with my photography skills. My daughter took some of the pics but the cattle were not understanding they had to pose.

There are alot better out there, don't settle. Any body and every body with black bulls is trying to sell them.

Ain't that the truth. When all things are considered, you can buy a good looking bull pretty cheap. If you're looking for all the test results and paperwork, you can spend all you want but if you're looking for black bulls, they are a dime a dozen. I've raised many of them, and maybe 1 out of 20 look good enough to breed again, and they're not perfect either.

#1 in your pics looked the best, even with the drooping back. My current bull looks like that too when he has a fully belly and is waddling towards the water tank. He does however produce good sized calves that don't have to be pulled upon delivery.

There is a such a thing as getting too much bull for the cows that you have.

I don't think that I am trying to buy too much bull. Would just like to have some average or a little better. Would like to make a slight improvement on what I had.

I disagree, the lesser quality your cows the least you can afford to use a substandard bull.

There is a wrong type of bull for your cows though.

Not referring to quality, referring to size.

Small in stature doesn't neccesarily mean small birthweights or easy calving.

True, but when you buy one of those "superbulls" that's as big as a truck and put him with "normal" cows, you're asking for problems. You don't want a small bull, but you have to be careful not to get one that's too big for your cows. My brother bought one of those "superbulls" and had to pull all but one calf that year. Dang near killed some of his cows...

If you have good cattle alot of times a little sway back won't transfer down to calves and if all your calves go to auction it probably wouldn't matter if a little did. Again, why settle though.

Brute this is off the subject but your P E T A sign offends me I am all for People Eating Tasty Animals
