well we have 3 more weeks of hay an then we are out.so the weather better warm up an rye grass kick it in gear an take off.weve gone through 200 bales of hay this year.never really letting the bunks get empty for long.fed about 14 protine tubs.all the calving cows are heavy milking as well.
 
Fingers crossed for you Bigbull! I have been lucky with the grass coming on, yet my hay prices have been outrageous here!

as much rain as we got last year thats what has me worried. This is the first year I was going to try to not feed hay unless it snowed or something
 
No sign of grass coming on here. Looks like I better plan on buying a few roles of hay. In the past 3 winters, they were back on grass by the middle of March. I cannot see that this winter!
 
On the average year, mine are walking away from pretty good hay mid April. Just like everything related to cattle, it's all about the weather.

Hey bigbull, I have some extra rolls if your interested. I'll make you deal and sell it at the same price ya'll sold it to us for during the drought. :D Kidding aside. Look to the west and there is hay available at reasonable prices if needed.
 
james T i hope we dont have to buy any hay.the goodthing is i know where extra hay is.an my friends know how cheap i am lolol.
 
Hang in there. I would think ya'll would have the Rye coming up by now but East Texas got a whole lot of rain and a lot of cold weather that might have delayed the growth. Mine started going gangbusters about a month ago until this last freeze. Warmer weather and little dry out will get yours coming real soon.
 
when we hit that week of warm weather the rye grass started growing.an the cows started grazing as fast as it would grow.
 
We fed our last home grown bale today, and I have 10 more being delivered tomorrow (paid $15 for 4x5, but not tested so who knows what I am getting!). I know the field that the hay is coming from (buying it from our Pastor), so I am not worried about weeds. We have already burned through 120 bales, and that is 20 more than last year. We are feeding about a round bale a day, so that will take me to the middle of March. We almost always have some green by now, but not this year. ALL BROWN! But, we are warming up this week to 60 days and 30 nights, so maybe we will see some green...
 
Sun came out yesterday with some punch to it. Over 40 degrees so there was water running everywhere. Traded a lot of snow yesterday for ice this morning. 8)

Not going to kid myself though. It will be a full 2 months before there is green grass here.
 
Grass...? Whats that?

Still 4-5 feet of white stuff on top UP here. Hopefully have animals back onto grass towards the end of May like most years.

Same here. Lots of dead grass, but not much green coming on.

My rye grass is doing its best to grow but the cold fronts coming through keep it set back. Been out of hay for two weeks but I'm throwing down some cubes and the free choice 32% liquid feed is sure helping. The patties are looking a little greener and getting a little loose so they are getting a little of that grass. Really need some rain and warmer ground temps and things will be right.
