ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) -- A gunman opened fire at an Oregon community college Thursday, killing at least seven people and wounding 20, authorities said.
The shooting happened at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland. The local fire district advised people via Twitter to stay away from the school. It later tweeted that there were "multiple casualties" but did not elaborate.
State police Lt. Bill Fugate told KATU-TV that seven to 10 people were dead and at least 20 others hurt. A photographer for the Roseburg News-Review newspaper said he saw people being loaded into multiple ambulances and taken to the local hospital.

Andrea Zielinski, a spokeswoman for Douglas County Sheriff's office, told The Associated Press: "There's no more threat."
Zielinski would not say whether a suspect was apprehended or dead.
The school has about 3,000 students. Its website was down Thursday, and a phone message left at the college was not immediately returned.
State police and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press seeking details.
The sheriff's office reported on Twitter that it received a call about the shooting at 10:38 a.m.
Students and faculty members were being bused to the Douglas County Fairgrounds, the sheriff's office said.

Terrible news coming out of Roseburg. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the community.
A spokeswoman for the Oregon department that oversees community colleges in the state said she had not received any detailed information about the shooting.
"It's extremely concerning and sad," said Endi Hartigan, spokeswoman for the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission.
The rural town of Roseburg lies west of the Cascade Mountains in an area where the timber industry has struggled. In recent years, officials have tried to promote the region as a tourist destination for vineyards and outdoor activities.

Yes, I had read that a little while ago. Thinking that here we go again, another shooting on a campus. What, is this the new thing? Or are our college campuses considered "soft targets".

This is becoming a trend. A not so good one at that. My heart goes out to the families.

Thoughts and prayers with the families.

One interview already talked about the campus being "gun free zone". The followup question was, "so do they screen, check/search people entering the campus since it is a gun free zone"??? That person had no response. Of course they don't, they haven't thought that far ahead. WAKE UP PEOPLE. That's almost laughable, but considering all those lost I can't laugh at that kind of stupidity.

Its terrible I feel for the families too.... IMO places that do not allow the carrying of guns seem to be the target of choice these days... I had this discussion with some folks they thought I was a crazy gun toter... I told them as long as people are against guns and have these gun free zones it will happen more and more... I asked them whens the last time you heard of a mass shooting in a gun store or shooting range. These cowards that do these things if they even thought the majority of folks in the place were carrying would not do that unless they are TRULY TRULY crazy.

It's in Roseburg, about 3 hrs south of me, we do have a member here on CT from Roseburg so he may know more. The shooter is a 20 yr old male, he's dead, shot by police, 13 dead as of now. Reports say he shot an instructor through a window and then entered the class room. Told everyone to lay on the floor and then one at a time get up and state their religion.... Terrorists, who knows, in the early stages of this kind of tragedy the media is scrambling to be the first to report.

One thing I believe is if we as a society can't figure out how to stop the rash of this kind of gun violence the 2nd amendment is going to take a lot of heat and reform, in what form? Who knows? This is happening to often and the powers that be will take action against the right to bare arms. So there is no confusion with me or my statement..... Firm believer of "out of my dead colds hands!"

My prayers go out to the families of these poor kids.

Just heard this on the radio, according to the Washington post; so in the 274 days of 2015 Oregon has had 294 mass shootings, a mass shooting is defined by 4 or more victims, I don't know if that means deaths or all victims. I don't know if it's factual or not. Again 2nd amendment is going to get attacked. Here's the link.

Where's the police, and why aren't they serving and protecting the public? Because they can't protect themselves much less the public. Is the shooting a shame yes, but we're under attack by the terrorists and have no real way to fight back.

What about changing the law to where law abiding citizens are required to carry? If you're on behavior meds or been convicted of a felony you wouldn't be allowed to carry

New organizations are reporting:
Kortney Moore, 18, told the News-Review she was in her Writing 115 class in Snyder Hall when a shot came through the window. Moore said she saw her teacher get shot in the head. The shooter then reportedly told the students to get on the ground before asking people to stand up and state their religion. He then began firing. Moore said she was lying on the ground with people who had been shot.

WASHINGTON — President Obama, speaking hours after a gunman killed a student and wounded a teacher at an Oregon high school, said Tuesday that his failure to push through stricter gun laws was the greatest frustration of his presidency, declaring, “We’re the only developed country on earth where this happens.”
Speaking in blunt and bitter terms about a bloody trail of shootings in the last month, Mr. Obama said: “Our levels of gun violence are off the charts. There’s no advanced, developed country on earth that would put up with this.”

It has been reported that people who stated they are Christians were shot in the head, no answer or silence were shot in the legs. I guess Christians live don't matter to a racist POsTUS. Too bad it wasn't a muslum that built a clock or a thug resisting arrest then the president could have shown concern and compassion.

This one was different as the shooter was targeting Christians according to what I read.
I want to know why they won't release his nationality.
Is this a terrorist attack they are trying to cover up?

My condolences and prayers to all the families. Another horrible tragedy that will be used to fuel the wrong fire. People have got to step back and look at how they raise their children. We have turned into a society that cannot deal with our problems and differences in a healthy way. Mental illness they blame just like the guns. It is not illness it is instability- that is why it is not diagnosed, treated, or cured. It is a product of our society that teaches no consequences or responsibility and rejection is just not acceptable. They don't teach "No" means try harder they teach "No" means scream louder. I also agree the sensationalizing by the media does nothing but add to the problem. Where this ends I don't know. I wish I did.

Hang on to them tight boys they are gonna come for them.

Anyone have a list of hard targets that have been attacked? I'd like to know.

There aren't any jed. It's college campuses, churches, movie theaters, unarmed military recruiting facilities. It's not hard to figure out, but the lame duck POTUS will use this fuel for his agenda.

Is there a pattern here or am I imaging things?

I have two children attending college, one at Iowa State and the other at Rose Hullman and they both have concealed carry permits. Both are excellent marksmen but they are prohibited from carrying them on campus. If they could carry and a shooter came into their sights he would have been stopped right there. But they are targets with our current laws and regulations. Once again blame is being placed without the cause being addressed. May our thoughts and prayers be with the families of all victims of violent crimes and may God watch over our children while they are away at school.

I listen to sports shows while in my truck, all the local shows did not talk sports but they talked both sides of gun control and mostly took calls. The point you brought up was made by a few callers, the college in Roseburg is a gun free area. as the callers stated ....... It's a concealed permit, be smart enough to conceal it and smart enough not to say a word about it. Deal with the consequences after you put the shooter down and you're still breathing. Great advice, carry and shut up.
