Ok Simmental breeders... I'm sure everyone has heard of Dream On. He's one of most used AI bulls in the past couple of years.

What I want to know, is how can I find out if he is a non diluter? I'm getting some funky colored calves out of a son of his, and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he isn'ta non diluter bull. Can anyone tell me where I can find out for sure?

No, he doesn't carry the diluter gene. Black cattle don't carry the diluter gene, if they did they would be diluted.

Dream On IS heterozygous black and will throw red calves if bred to red cows (50% red/50% black) or other heterozgyous black cows (75% black/25% red).

You are getting the dilution from the "blonde" cow in your previous post and from your other females if you have other calves that are coming out diluted.

Have you run other black Simmental bulls in your herd before this one? Your posts remind me of the reaction a lot of people had to running their first black Simmental bulls back in the early 90s.

...and nothing makes a person happier than watching their calves get docked at the sale barn because the buyers are too lazy to tell the difference between your calves and a Longhorn cross.

lol.. no, I've had black bulls before.. both homozogous black (which sometimes gave me a gray calf out of a Brahman or Brahman influence cow) and heterozygous black bull which ONLY gave me red or black calves, even out of the "blond" cow, and out of Brahman and Brahman influenced cow.

The bull I have now is red, and a Dream On son, which is why I'm confused as to why I"m getting dun and very light colored calves.

Something made me stop and think about this again. Is this the bull you were talking about in your previous thread?

Dream On is a heterozygous Black bull. He is NOT diluted.
If your RED bull came out of a BLACK cow, than he is NOT carrying the diluter gene. So, if this is the case, any "odd" colors are coming from the DAM of the new calves. Light red does not mean it is diluted. Non-diluted reds can range from a very soft light red to a deep cherry red.

If your RED bull came out of a RED cow, then he COULD be carrying the diluter gene inherited from the Red dam.

Just because your previous calves were not diluted, doesn't mean the dam isn't carrying the diluter gene. If she is only carrying 1 diluter gene, she could have MANY calves & never pass it on. It's a flip of the coin.
