Hi Everyone.
Have any of you ever had a calf that eats his way to having a huge hay belly? I have an almost 7 month old Angus bull calf with a huge "hay" belly. He was sick back in early July with a respiratory bug that knocked him back quite a bit. The other calves passed him up in growth while he was sick. After he got over it (and it took a few weeks) he started eating & growing again. Seems like all he does now is eat.. I mean this calf goes off & eats by himself when the others in the group are lying down, when he runs over to meet you there is always food hanging from his mouth. Looks like he swallowed a giant egg! At first I was concerned that something was wrong, but he acts healthy & has no temp. His mama tends to pork up if you don't watch her as well. I'm thinking it is just about time for the fat camp for calves. Think he'll grow out of this phase?
 
Forgot to add that he has been wormed w/ ivomec & doesn't get anything other than the pasture grass. The field they are in now must have different type of feed from the others. They ALL gain weight every time they are in this field.
 
Just how much fat does this bull have...a hay belly or is his tail head in line with his back line....our bull gets fatter than the steers that are older and larger than him on the same ration.
Some are pigs...bad...but like people some just can't eat enough.....
 
A definite hay belly. It is lower on the sides & bottom of his belly, not high like a bloated animal would be. He seems happy as a lark- eatin' his way into a XXL....

I push on it & he doesn't care. Doesn't feel abnormal at all. Just a porker I guess. Must be in his genes. he's a
Bushwacker 41-93 calf & like I mentioned mom isn't slender. Her bull calf last year didn't do anything like this.
 
I have exactly the same kind of calf. I have a 6 month old Limo steer that eats all of the time. His head is in the grass even when the others are bedded and he stands in the hottest sunshine. He also porks up on any grain that I give him. He even grazes at night in the rain when the rest have bedded in the woods. He is not gaining much in height but sure is getting wider. He will mug you for grain if he even thinks you may have a bag near. He was ill with a respitory cough back in May and I gave him a shot of Mycotil. A day later he was eating like a defensive end. Must be trying to make up for lost time.
