A friend of mine has offered to loan me one of his reg. Angus bulls this spring. For some of my cows it'll be their 3rd calf but I have some young hiefers that are due to calf anytime now. It'll be thier 2nd but some are pretty small..900Lbs or so. He's a mature 2200 lb boy. I fear he may be too large for some. Suggestions?

That's a big bull for 900 pound cows, but he probably knows his job pretty well. Yeah, find out what size calves he sires. Low to mid 80's sounds about right.

I was concerned about the size of the calves also. I'll do some checking but I'm thinking about mid 80's. The girls should be calving in the next 2-4 weeks and if all goes well they should be a lot stouter by next season to calf. I just wonder if they can stand up under his weight.

I think he's around 6. He has been used along with one other that my friend owns till now and he's just wanting to put some new blood in and has purchased 2 other bulls. He's got some georgus calves hitting the ground now and I don't worry about the fertility or disease just the size compared to my youngsters.

Some older experienced big bulls are easier on cows then smaller inexperienced ones. Has to do with athleticism I think.

If the bull is current on vaccinations and bse and he doesn't throw big calves, sounds like a good deal. His size really shouldn't be an issue; mature bulls are like mature men - they know how "to take care of business", so to speak.
