The last week has brought a experienced moma who had twins DOA and a heifer abandon a newborn leaving him to die. SO as a friend of mine once told me, "If you got em, you lose some". True but I find it always helps to look at how many calves have been born with no problems to remind me that things can always be worse - look on the bright side.

So here's some pics of some of my cow's calves. Most of them are less than a month old. Warning: my cows are not butterball fat! If you want to see butterball fat cows in the winter, go look at the people who feed from a bag. These cows work, and they will lose condition in the winter. Part of it. If they can't take that and still rebreed, I don't want them.

This is the ugliest cow I have, who also weans the heaviest calf every year. Ugly or not, she has a home:

I like this cow a lot. This year's calf is a heifer. She's had three bull calves in a row. May have to keep this one:

My favorite heifer calf so far:

Two calves just looking:

Beefmaster cow crossed with Angus plus to yield:

As you can see, all of the calves have the same look as their sire. BY 2012 I'll be using a hereford instead.

I hate seeing anyone on a roll of issues such as you have had cypress.

Good luck on those super baldies. I'll be there myself once I go to a terminal bull.

Backhoe, I actually consider myself quite a fortunate guy. Don't know why, definitely not because I'm a saint. I do plan to go to all baldies within a 2 year period. I'll be getting a young hereford bull very soon, and he will be the future herdsire for the group of cows at my place. I'll still keep the brangus bull on the braford cows at my dad's. Hopefully by the fall of 2012 I'll be like Knersie, and every calf will have a white face. Until then, I think I'm going to try and retain some heifers from the bull I have. He's been a very good bull, for a blue collar bull.
