The last week has brought a experienced moma who had twins DOA and a heifer abandon a newborn leaving him to die. SO as a friend of mine once told me, "If you got em, you lose some". True but I find it always helps to look at how many calves have been born with no problems to remind me that things can always be worse - look on the bright side.
So here's some pics of some of my cow's calves. Most of them are less than a month old. Warning: my cows are not butterball fat! If you want to see butterball fat cows in the winter, go look at the people who feed from a bag. These cows work, and they will lose condition in the winter. Part of it. If they can't take that and still rebreed, I don't want them.
This is the ugliest cow I have, who also weans the heaviest calf every year. Ugly or not, she has a home:
I like this cow a lot. This year's calf is a heifer. She's had three bull calves in a row. May have to keep this one:
My favorite heifer calf so far:
Two calves just looking:
Beefmaster cow crossed with Angus plus to yield:
As you can see, all of the calves have the same look as their sire. BY 2012 I'll be using a hereford instead.
