I have been browsing thru some threads old and new, it appears that some times livestock will go unchecked for several days. Is this normal?

3 days it the most ill go. Then only in the summer when no feed is needed. When calving its at least twice a day.

I can walk across the drive with an electric fence tester if it is good then the east and south or good.
Move over two feet check the north and west run if the fence's are good no sense in riding around looking for cow's.
Sometimes in the summer I don't see them for three or four days.

Often in the summer time when we had steers out grazing we wouldn't check them for days, so I'd say it's normal yes. The only time we'd be checking them is a) if they're about to be switched pastures, or b) if a few got out and the herd needs to be checked to see if any others went AWOL. Besides, we're often too busy in the summer to have to check on them all the time anyway...

In the winter, I see everything every day or every 2nd or 3rd day.

In summer, as long as I can see red and white faces from a distance (say 1/4 mile), I might not check some herds (especially yearlings) for up to two weeks, but usually every 3-4 days. All depends how busy a time it is. Not going to spend every waking moment trailing cows, that's what the bull is for.

Worst thing that can happen is they die. And if I couldn't handle a few deaths a year, I wouldn't have any on the place.

They are hard to miss when they are standing outside your window mooing. :lol2:
Usually check everyday in winter spring and fall. In the late spring the fall cows go down south about 3 miles and I might not check on them for 3-4 days.

In the summer ours will go 2-3 weeks between checks. Course we seem to be looking at cows every few days, but that's just because we have so many pastures....But we see them everyday in the winter.

winter I keep them behind the house and hay daily. Summer the stay in the woods I see them and check fences every 2 to 3 days

guess I am the same way.. I check every day if I can. at the most.. its skip one day. too much can happen in a day.. just talking from experience.

i just worrie about our waters plugging when its really hot as there all on pond water and well stuff does get in the lines. and in the winter we unroll hay daily and well worried about the water waster plugin as its got a tiny hole.

I check my cattle daily. My herd is to small to be careless about whether one lives or dies.
Besides it is my therapy at the end of the day. :cboy:

Well i read this last night and decided I need to look at all of mine today. Some had been 2 weeks. I counted the cows at each place but had forgot my record book at home so I still wasnt sure they were all there. But 3 new babys since my last visit.

I would not have any if i couldn't check them every day, even the one's that are on leased land a half hour away, but that's me. For most i guess it is normal to just them go.

I think more posters than not check daily. From what I have read on here the last couple months most are not dealing with huge cattle numbers.
