Here are some pics of some of my favorite March and April born calves. I like the looks of this years steer crop as well as a couple of the heifers that I will retain. All of these calves are out of a RA King Rob son and commercial cows. He puts some junk in the trunk.
Pics were taken with my cell phone so I apologize for the poor quality.

Steer calf born mid-march getting a meal from momma. She's doing a good job for a first calf heifer

I retained a heifer last year from the same cow / bull and she turned out to be top notch so I have high hopes for this red heifer. They have great dispositions too which goes a long way in my book :D

Hoss-

I agree that the butt on this calf is exemplary - but the characteristic that really catches my eye is the almost perfect alignment of his hind legs and hocks! The fact that he is wide and thick through the stifles and gaskins predicts that his hocks will be aligned in a very correct manner! Another factor to notice with these pictures is that even when he is turned around and looking behind him - his leg alignment is STILL almost perfect! Good bone. Good bull calf.

A newcomer question: how did you get such a nice hereford colored calf out of what appears to be a black white face heifer? I thought that black was dominant? With eye color no less. But the ears doon't look like hereford ears?? My inexperience is showing. They look good what ever the breed or color.

The black white face cow is heterozygous black, one black gene one red gene. She passed the red gene to the calf. Happens 50% of the time.

Thanks Doc. There is one other steer that looks better than this white faced one but he is not as trusting and when I get close enough with the camera phone for a pic he spins around to face me. All in all the crop is very good this year and I expect to make out well at the feeder calf sale. I have some cows that are somewhat lacking in the butt department but this bull corrected that. This steer in particular (white faced) momma has great leg set which I'm sure she passed on.

Since this 1/4 herf and 3/4 angus cow was bred to a red angus bull she had a 50% chance of throwing a red calf like Dun said. I too was surprised at the amount of white that came out on this calf though.

Good calves. But a calf's phenotype at weaning can be deceiving.

Have you ever retained your calves in a feedlot and sold on a grid?

If not, you'll be surprised at how much you will learn when they are graded.

I recommend it for large and small producers alike.................
