Receipts: 2010 Last Week: 1964 Year Ago: 2253

Compared to last week: Steer calves 2.00-3.00 higher. Few feeder steers
steady to 2.00 higher. Feeder heifers and heifer calves steady to 2.00 higher.
Demand very good. Weigh-ups mostly average, few full, Flesh conditions thin to
medium. Moderate to heavy rains across much of the state has driven demand on
thin grass ready cattle. Receipts comprised of 44 percent steers, 48 percent
heifers, 7 percent bulls, with 16 percent of feeder cattle over 600 lbs.
Slaughter cows 3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls 2.00 higher. A total of 325
cows and bulls sold with 37 percent going to packers.

Around here heavy 700 to 800# feeder heifers are running about $9 cwt. lower than steers. Do you have any ideas on why there is a larger discount this year?

Always been my understanding that heavier demand to retain heifers for breeding stock will drive up the price. Less demand for breeding replacements mean more available for the feedlot. The more available to feed, the less the feedlot has to pay to get them.
