"BJR Summerford and Friends" Sale.

I have a pair and the neighbor has two pair in it.

There will most likely be some bargains due to drought........

Pretty danged good cattle...........

We had a great sale, much to my surprise! I had asked the sale manager before the sale if we were gonna be selling these animals by the pound..............................................

He didn't think it was too funny.

Cows, calves, embryos, and heifers averaged $2655 each.

Pretty fair considering no one wants more cows due to drought.

Wow. That does sound like a good sale, especially for the conditions. Congratulations.

Thanks. Before the sale I had asked one of my buddies to bid on my animals if they brought under $600.

I never cracked a smile and walked off.

Can't you just no sale if they don't bring what you are willing to accept for them.

It was a joke. In my anticipation of a less than desirable sale.

Just curious, that is always a fear when attending sales, I have seen it happen before and have brought to the attention of the auctioneer before when I was bidding on a cow and the owner's son was bidding against me.

Have no fear. If the price of the animal exceeds what you are willing to pay, there is no one FORCING you to bid higher.

Because Sales Managers and Auctioneers charge the seller based on a percentage of the sale price, it costs the seller when he buys his own cattle.

I would much rather bid on my own animals in an auction than have someone else do it for me. When I do, I am bidding what the animal will be worth to me just as another bidder is. Also, I am out front about it.

There is nothing corrupt about bidding on your own cattle, because you have no idea what the other buyer is willing to pay or how high he will go, thus driving up the sales commission, risk losing the income, and losing all the time and effort to prep cows for the sale and get them there.

Lot's of times I will have bids in my pocket from people who cannot attend the sale and call me beforehand to bid a certain price for them. On many occasions I have had 2 or more separate bids from these non-attendant buyers on the same animal and the animal went to a bidder who wasn't there, and some actually bought them below what their bid was. In these cases I will register with the sales management before the sale in the non-attendee's name. I have had as many as 4-5 different buyer numbers when selling.

Of course some sellers set a minimum on an animal before the sale and the auctioneer sells her to a "ghost" buyer. You'd never know who bought her.

Watched a big well known Bull sale on RFD a few months back. About half the animals in the sale went back to the original owner. He lost money big time.

Everyone is not out to screw you Chris.

A cattle sale is an expensive endeavor for the seller. All of the commissions and other expenses come out of the seller's pockets. I have seen them go as high as 25%-30% of the auction price.

Believe me, the seller doesn't want to take any of his cattle home from a sale. He is protecting his investment just as the other bidders are.

Mike, I understand what you are saying, and I haven't had anyone twist my arm lately either. I set a budget before I attend a sale and that is based on the current market and we all have to adjust what we are willing to pay or sell our cattle for based on what the market will bring. Sometimes you win and others you lose. I imagine if you take a trailer full to a sale and the market is down due to the drought like we have had the last 2 years, you will have to decide if you take them all home or you take your losses and hope that next year it gets better.

Please just let me know the next time I attend one of your sales if you have a min amount for a bull and if you are bidding on them for others and I will make sure my limit fits or not before we get started.

I also know that its not a good thing to sit and watch your good quality bulls go for way less than it cost you to raise and sell them with the sales cost. I have no bid a few in my time and you pay the sales fee even then based on the highest bid.

I was not really talking about sales other than at the local barn, I know at the sale barns I attend they will bring it to your attention if they catch the seller bidding his own cattle.

Oh yeah I forgot, like you reminded me of before,,,,Don't take it so personal

I have attended 1 of your sales before and I thought your bulls were priced very fair and I would have bought one if I was in the market at the time.

I didn't take it personal in the least.

But, you can't just stand up in the middle of a sale and shout: "No Sale"!

Is that what you expect sellers to do?

I don't think I have seen over 5 NO SALES in the past 2 years, and the way it has always been done that I have witnessed. The seller will shout out NO SALE at the closing of the bid and will usually announce the min he will take. Then the amount will be announced and if the high bidder still wants them for that price they can still purchase them or if not the seller has a trailer with his own cattle going back home less the sales fee.

What the heck is the difference between me doing that and bidding on my own cattle?

Besides making an ass of myself................ that is?
