With the enhancement of Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) using genomics information and better statistical methods, the State of Kentucky CAIP Bull Genetic Improvement Program's EPD Guidelines are being adjusted.

The guidelines will change for Bull purchases under CAIP and for some breeds, the changes are significant. I have not seen the new guidelines but it sounds like the seller will have to do genomic testing to demonstrate that the bull or bulls sold pursuant to the CAIP Program meet the adjusted guidelines. These guidelines will be available at the county UK Extension offices.

IMO, the CAIP Bull Genetic Improvement Program has made a positive change to the beef herd in Kentucky. These programs are very positive. In our County, many producers are using better bulls as a direct result of CAIP. Most producers earn their living off the farm. Beef production is not their priority so CAIP provides the incentives and extra money to put a better bull in the pasture.

We have a similar program here in Tennessee they call it TAEP. They will pay you back $400 more on the bulls that are genetic tested so that's a pretty good return on the testing fee. I`m sure a lot of people have better bulls because of the program but there`s still many that are too lazy or just don`t care that will never try to improve genetics and unfortunately that reflects on the rest of us that do try to improve. :2cents:
