I'm new to registering cattle here so help me out.

When you buy semen, can you register multiple calves off of one certificate or do you have to have a certificate for each calf you register?

TIA

And you can buy these after the calf is born?

unless indicated that the certificate must be purchased with the semen, then yes, the certificate can be purchased after the calf is born. highly recommended so you can make sure the calf is worth registering before spending the money on a certificate.

some breeds sell package deals....semen/certificate combo.

I've been looking but can't find any info on this:

I've heard guys talk about being able to call in to their associations and get the numbers on a calf before they register it. It was actually a simmental guy I was talking to. He said the bull we are looking at doesn't have any EPDs yet since it's not yet registered but he said he could call and get the numbers on it by telling them the sire and dam. He said he thought it costs a couple bucks.

Does AHA do that?

they would and i don't know if they charge, but you can save your money. pedigree estimates are simply calculated by halving each epd of the parents & adding them together. for example, a cow with a bw epd of +4 mated to a bull with a bw epd of +6, the bw epd (PE) of the calf will be 2+3 or +5.

Cool, thanks for the info Txag.

Everybody have great weekend.

I have to move my sister saturday morning but then it's off to look at black simmental bulls again. This is the last road trip. I should have pics to share on monday.

Later all!

The half of each parent is true IF there isn't a significant difference in birth weight. An individual with a significantly lower or higher birth weight will have it's birth weight EPD adjusted based on that individuals specific performance.

The other advantage to waiting to purchase certificates until after the calf is born is that people don't register bulls unless they're keeping them to sell as herd sires.
