I drove from Fort Pierce to Sarasota this afternoon on Hwy 70 and the pastures were sure green and pretty. I think I saw more cows this time than I have ever seen this time of year. There is a huge set of dairy farms named Larsens and they have several hundred or more cows at each barn along the road for quite aways. There were alot of brangus type cows and they looked in real good shape in the beef pastures. Have you Florida cattle people had a good pasture and water winter, or is it just through this area?
I also made the mistake of stopping at a pik-ur-own strawberry farm that was a little too fancy. Alot of hydroponic crops and everything grown in styrofoam towers. I went and picked a couple of quarts to munch on during the drive and when I went in to pay for them, I found out I should have checked the price first. They were 4 dollars per pound and they were fresh, but tasted watery since they weren't grown in the ground. I wont make that mistake again. Luckily, I found a Sonic Drive-In in Arcadia and used a foot long chili cheese dog to help all that strawberry water digest.
 
How 'bout the price on the hot dog? I ordered the same thing from Sonic in Eastman Friday. Got the #3 meal deal. Fries, diet coke, and chili cheese dog. $5.99.

You got a good deal on your dog. My #3 cost 6.19, plus tax, and that wasn't "sonic size", either.
 
:lol2: Mine was $5.99 including tax. It's not really a foot long either. I found out you can't eat it while driving. Had to pull over on the side of the road to eat.
 
I just returned from a week in the same area. It's kinda weird to leave 2 feet of snow on the ground and a day later see cows eating green grass.

All those floppy eared cows sure look different that what we have at home. I'm guessing my cows would croak in about a week down there come July.

Last thought about Florida, I'm sure it's different out in the country but, in town I've never seen so many people practicing to be dead. What a boring lifestyle.
 
you drove right thru mykka city. the flashin lite on 70. shouldve stopped at suzyq's fer lunch..good stuff in there. mmm pizza's great!
anyways its been grrenin up some lately cuz we had some rain in the last 2 weeks or so. larsens is a good sized dairy and so is the dakins bros place. lotta cattle ranchin between arcadia and sarasota. aint much else to see on that road
 
If you drove 70 you were really in what we call Southern Fla not Central. Basically anything from about Orlando south will maintain pretty good grasses during the winter months. Plus those old Fla cows you see can maintain on just about anything they can get in their mouths.
 
I will definitely have to stop at SuzyQ's if I get back over that way. Those small town family diners are the best. Looks like those cows are doing real well on what they are eating. It looks like they are bred just right for their area. In Missouri, I want no part of long eared cows, but across the south, I am sure it is a necessity. That might be the most important of your breed decisions, raise what does best in your area.
