Recently read an article that stated approximately $6.2million worth of livestock thefts occured in 2005. Just curious how many folks have had to deal with livestock theft, and what they do to prevent it.

I have probably had anything and everything that can be stolen stolen from me (or somebody who I was working for) stolen at some point in the past.....cattle, pickup truck, golf cartS, tools, donkeys, hogs, wire, posts, furniture, gates, pharmaceuticals, timber, and the law does NOT really care. The legal term for thief in the justice system is "non-violent offendor". Thieves AND VANDALS are an ever present menace in this society and follow this industry like the plague. Other people may have better luck, but no one has ever gone too jail and nothing stolen of mine has ever been returned. Locks, fences, no Tresspassing signs, gates, etc definitely help; but the saavy thief is always watching and prepared too deal with any modest security. My only advice is too always be prepared for your opportunity too shoot, shovel, and don't talk about what you were forced to do EVER.

The guy that leases some of my dads crop ground was getting alot of damage done by poachers driving through his corn fields. He buried spikes at a creek crossing said that worked for awhile. Finally, he found one of their trucks stuck in one of the fields. Put some gas and a match to it. Said that group hasnt been around in awhile.

I wonder what the final total of stolen livestock, crops and property will be in Zimbabwe? the last 600 farmers have been presented eviction orders despite the fact they are supposed to be protected by an international agreement as they are are foriegn nationals who invested foriegn currency in their farms under an agreement with the government.
I always lock up everything I can, mark and photograph everything and keep alert dogs, if you make it difficult enough, the thieves will go somewhere else!

I hate it for them; but it has become blatantly obvious to anybody paying attention that the old Rhodesians have absolutely no rights in modern Zimbabwe. They need too get the heck out of there or it will be their lives that they lose. I hope that South Africa is not 30 years away from where Rhodesia is today.

Australia has gained a few Zimbabwean farmers. Its our gain and Zimbabwe's loss. Mugabe needs to be evicted. Perhaps he could go to Iran or North Korea, they might find some use for him there.I've had cattle stolen from our former family property by my brother. Police would not do a thing to help, despite NLIS tag numbers being given to them.
Never ever had anything stolen from me otherwise.

Brandon,,,,,WOWWWWWW I do understand what you mean by the law not doing anything,,,,but I am not ready to shoot shovel and shutup on a person. YET   I have had a few that have tempted me on a few occasions.

My biggest probelm is with hunters who get permission to hunt adjoining property and think they have the right to cut though yours as a short cut, or come looking for their deer dogs that run off.

The past 2 weeks I had one man who wanted to kill yotes on my land and got mad when my wife told him "NO"

And the man looking for his dog after he drives down my road after passing my no trespass sign 1500 ft back and just turns around in my yard as I am on the steps watching him.

I am very easy to get along with people and would help someone catch their dog if they had the common courtesy to just come and ask you.

I will be putting up an electric gate this year and you will have to know the code to get on my land then.

The LAW is this day and time is useless in my opinion.

I dont disagree with you on the law part. When I was a teenager (not quite 20 years ago) I was fishing with a buddy and someone started shooting at us. I am sure if they wanted to hit us they would have, but it scared the hell out of us with bullets going by. Anyway, we found out who did it, went to the sheriff and got nowhere with it. No charges, not even questioning. He was good about it, but said there was nothing he could do about it. It would be our word against his. Two years later the kid was arrested for arson, burnt down his step-fathers house. Kid was killed in a car wreck all doped up on some type of meth about 4 years ago. Gotta say I didnt hate to see him go.

-There is no doubt that some cattle are physically stolen, however, I would wager that of the $6.2 million a majority of the cattle never existed other than on paper.
