We do not have a big beef market here. How do I check the price of beef? Do I use the futures market in the newspaper? What is the price of beef right now? At what age or weight do you sell your cattle off, to make the most money?

.

Fats (finished-ready for slaughter) are bringing around $0.80 per lb. 1100 to 1300 lbs.
Feeders (younger calves -to be fed) around $1.25 per lb.
When to sell calves is up to the individual situation.
Depends on your forage, feed situation.
You do have a big beef market there! Just check the grocery store cooler. ;-)

lancemart,

Suggest you go to your local sale barn and see what is happening in your area. There is quite a difference in regions.

Time of sale depends on your space, plans and objectives. We use two approaches in our commerial herd; 1) We sell at 500-550 wt.or 2)We sell at 700-750...depending on the market, time of year and available feed/grazing assets. No one plan fits all..we have found.

i agree with preston, lancemart. if there is no sale in your area, then get with some of the local cattlemen and ask them what works best in your area.

good luck
