A couple months ago my oldest cows died a mysterious death. That in and of itself wouldn't bother me but the condition of the body was strange. She had a gash running across her chest and belly and a couple teats seemed to have been cut off. Slobber was all over her. They was also no blood anywhere and she was lying on her back. We knew if wasn't coyotes or wolves because that is not what a dog kill looks like. We thought it might be a cougar (there it one rumoured to be around here that apparently killed a few horses) or a bear (there has been increased oil and gas activity further south around Lodgepole that might make a bear move north). Since here belly was open we could see that her stomach was full of fresh hay and she died in the field. that day I fed the cows at home (so she couldn't have been too sick). Fish and Wildlife looked at it for two hours and said that if they could trace it to a predator they would so we could get compensation but they couldn't. Any ideas?

Nope (not even the ones imspecting the high tention lines). I only have 40 acres (and you could see her body from the house) and in the middle of our land is a microwave tower.

Sure sounds like a bear kill to me. From time-to-time a bear will just kill cattle for sport and not eat but a few bites of the carcass, if this is the case there will be more found. Has the wildlife folks found any sign, will be alot of hair on the trees this time of year and the scat looks like thick black rope, and claw marks all over the trees at least thats what I've found when hunting the cuddly creatures.
My two bits worth.

Hey--you said this was a couple of months ago which kinda rules my idea out--but we had a horse die about 10 yrs ago looked just the same-- I live where there are lots of bears/cougars/wolves etc. even fish and wildlife had never seen anything like it--we all thought it was a mutilation--but it was in a very isolated crrek botton with no real outside access--later we figured out it was lightning ( or so we think)--I live in Alberta too and we did have a snow storm with lightening March/April--maybe she got hit--or found another power source ????? Looked freaky I bet--it'll probablly be one of those stories you tell forever--and are never sure about .
