Take a char, show it and see how it is judged, then
Dye it red and show it,
then dye it black ( of course black are not were well excepted) and show it..all the same animal.. then you would see the bies against color...

It could be any breed, angus red or black

Hereford, horned,polled, or black

People like what they know, and it seems they are somewhat blind to quality if it does not fit what they know....

i know what u r talking about when my son was 5years old he showed a 3month old brahman cross heifer.a grey heifer with tiger stripes picture perfect.this was his first time showing a calf.of course the rest of the cattle weigh 1000pds mostly black couple chars.the judge is some big wig college guy.i am not kidding one bit he made fun of the calf to he asked me how old is this thing.what breed is this thing.needless to say we didnt win anything. but my son was grinnin from ear to ear cause he got more compliments and had way more people around him and his just because of how pretty she was.i had people asking me if i had any for sale.other little kids wanting to do it just because of the calf that we brought.thats what i like to see young people taking a interest in cattle that are not just black.

Even judges have preferences although it shouldn't interfere....it often does....too bad you don't know ahead of time who the judge is going to be or you could just show what he/she likes. Sad but often true.

My wife shows dogs and in their world they do know who the judges are going to be ahead of time. She has a little book with notes about the judges she's familiar with and what they look for. Sometimes who the judge is determines whether she's going to enter a show or not. No two are the same.

The problem with most of the judges I have seen is they are not cattlemen and a lot don't even own cattle.
I am a Hereford/Brimmer/Brangus man two cattle being equal I would more than likely pick one of prefferences.
But when you are judging and kids are involved it should always be the best animal no matter the breed.

When we pick our judges I like to get a feedlot manager to do it. We had Bill Hartall once-he'd sorted a million fat cattle in his day-it was a pretty informative show for the kids.

We don't do show stuff, but I thought the judge was judging for a BREED standard? So if you took a Char bull and he won the Char class, he wouldn't necessarily be the same kind of bull that a Hereford breeder would want with his herd, no matter his color/markings. Steer classes might be different.

The point I was tring to make is that in classes , the difference between the same breed, how better cattle can not be like as well simply because of color.

If a Angus is black or red, color is not important as quality, Many would say the black are better just because they are BLACK...

Take CAB for example, all kinds of non-angus black cattle can qualify, yet the RED Angus do not...I know Frankie, it is a easy fix, just use a Black Angus bulls...

You would think that is how cattle should be judged, just like dogs based on the breed standards. Unfortunately the book taught steer jock judges of today don't have a clue on what real cattle should look like. The one with the biggest butt and most hair usually wins, and yes the black animal will always be placed above any other colored animal.

They must do a better job of selecting judges for the fairs around here. Last year a red yearling heifer was champion crossbred female at several fairs and was supreme champion female at a couple. That's against all breeds, she was alwasy (except for Herefords) the only red animal. That was under 4 different judges at 6 fairs

From what I have heard they do judge cattle the correct way in your part of the country and color doesn't matter. Unfortunately in Oklahoma it's all about the color of their hair and how much hair they have. I have actually heard a judge say he placed one steer over the other steer because it had more hair and was groomed better.

dying a char black has already been done...at the denver stock show...he won..and was purchased by McDonalds...his name was "Big Mac"...no joke...

The real point I was tring to make has nothing to do with THE SHOW RING, we all know that is not the real world..But reather how color impacts the sale barn and the barnyard...It seams that after 40 yeards of CAB pimping black angus , that there is people who believe BLACK is better...

I know Blacks bring more money in local sale barn, but people believe ,False I might add, THAT BLACK IS THE BEST....

If Red Angus had been pushed as hard as blacks, I dare say Red would be KING....

I raise Black Angus and black crosses, not because I am sold that they are the best, but because ...

1 They are common, large gene pool, and easy to buy( cheap compared to equal quality) Herefords or Red angus

2 They are what is consistently the best salers around here...

3 And I like f-1 black baldies as my mommy cows...

Friend of mine's dad was kicked out of Agribition about 20 years ago for doing this. They died a Charolais black and showed him as an angus or spray painted him black cant remember, but they got caught and ejected from Agribition for good.
