Hi All,

I am sure all of you have favorite cattle books that you have read, so lets share.

List your favorite books--weather they be technical cattle books, bios, fiction, fantasy, mystery or what ever.

List your favorite magazines, newsletters, cattle videos and other helpful, obtainable information too.

Here is my short list:

BEEF magazine is one of my all time favorties--its free and informative.
http://www.beef-mag.com/

DROVERS magazine always has inventions and practical ideas that even I can use. Its free as well.

Got 2 books for Xmas and am presently reading them:

COWS..... A RUMINATION by Carl Hileman 2004
Nice easy reading with black and white photos of various cows and the thoughts of famous cow lovers thu the ages. Poems, sayings, proverbs.
A nice gift for the cow lover in your life.

A COW'S LIFE by M R Montgomery 2004
The Surprising History of Cattle and how the Black Angus came to be Home on the Range.
I am on page 18, and so far it is a very interesting read.

Anyone else read this one yet ?

Coupled with this historical site of photos:

http://www.msu.edu/~ritchieh/historical/cattletype.html

makes it even more interesting.

I am in the process of reading:
A COW'S LIFE by M R Montgomery 2004
The Surprising History of Cattle and how the Black Angus came to be Home on the Range.
I am about 1/2 way through it and am still enjoying it. I highly recomend this book to all of you who want to know different opinions on the history of cattle in general, not just the angus.
Happy reading! :)

There are lots of fabulous books out there to help you.

The knowlegable cow folks here will be listing their favorites....but there are other ways to find helpful books as well:

1. Go to your library and look in the AGRICULTURAL section and ask the librarian for assistance. ( free--and you can copy the parts of books you really like )
2. I have found a few great ag/cow books in used bookstores, yard sales and at the recycling center as well.

3. Go to amazon.com and put CATTLE in the search area to see a list of books.

BUY THEM USED and save big $$$ so you can buy more~!!

4. Trade books with friends.
I am the librarian for the "TailGate" Library ( it started with one milk case of books in my truck ) for a non-profit group that people donate their used books & videos to, so others can borrow them. Its very successful and we have only lost one batch of videos in the mail in the past 7 years.

However, the BEST assistance you can have when starting out is to have a mentor, someone who has been raising cattle for a long time.
Find a cattle person in your area either by driving up to their farm and chatting with them ( everyone LOVES to talk cows ) or finding their name on one of the member lists of a breed organization. Stay within your area so you will have immediate help should you ever need it. Find out when your state/county/local Cattle group meets and go meet the members~!! Hang out at the local grain store, slaughter house, livestock barn, county fair etc if you have to, in order to meet other cattle people.

And of course stay tuned to this forum--it's the best in the nation~!!
