I'm building a Breeding box and want to know if I need to install a head catch or something so I can inject cows with synchronizing hormones. I have never used a breeding box before. I've read that the cows are calm and docile, but I don't know if they calm enough to jab a needle in their neck without being restrained. Please any advice would be extremely helpful.

I've bred em in the alley, tied with someone leaned against em, never in a box, never seen the need, but after all the breeding places, I won't stick a needle in em unless there caught or jammed tight in the alley, sometimes they kick real hard with that needle.

I give all the needles with them in the crush or chute as you call it but without their heads caught, I give them in the rump and have no problems. My reasoning is to minimise catching their heads unless absolutely needed so they don't get shy at getting caught as in when I put in cidrs and AI only because I need them further up so I can get in behind them. Heifers I inseminate without catching their heads as they are shorter and I can get the kick gate closed behind them.

We've always just pushed them up through the chute "to" the headgate but don't catch their head. Put a post behind them and go to work. Simple and easy.

To simplify things I think a lot of folks make things way to complicated
