Chinese Cat Lovers Halt Truck Hauling Cats to Restaurants

Chinese cat lovers mobilized online to save a truck load of cats from the cooking pot, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Veteran Shanghai cat rescuer Duo Zirong started off her mission of deliverance on Friday when she called police to stop a truck stuffed with some 800 live cats, the China Daily said.

The standoff happened at a parking lot in a southern suburb of Shanghai. It continued for hours while cat lovers spread word of the incident online, eventually raising $1,320 in donations to buy the whole load.

They now hope to place them in homes after posting their pictures and profiles on the Internet.

"They were so frightened," it quoted one of the rescuers, Huo Puyang, as saying.

"Some bit people when they tried to let them out of the boxes. Some still hide in dark corners and will not come out for food," Huo said.

Cat meat is considered a delicacy in southern China and cats are sold live to markets where they are slaughtered fresh for customers.

To the best of my knowledge I have never eaten house cat, but I have ate mountain lion. It was tasty.

That reminds me of an old war story from way back when I was in the navy. I lived in a house with four other sailors in Hawaii. And the local cat had kittens and we could not give them away.
I loaded the kittens in a canvas bag one afternoon when I was scheduled for a training flight. I took the bag of squirming kittens in to the maintenance room with me and set them on the counter while I reviewed past discrepancies noted on the helicopter. One of the girls jumped back and said, “Your bag just moved” Yes I know. Well what do you have in it? Kittens that need to be sent to Davy Jones locker if they don’t find a home in the next 5 minutes.
I went out to preflight the helicopter and when I returned for the kittens, the bag was empty.

The down side was that I was known from then on with the girls in Maintenance as “That mean cat killer”

Yup, eating beef is so wrong and unacceptable. Good thing I dont care to be politically correct. I would starve to death.

You cant judge another culture by your own anymore than you can judge the actions of past by the morals of today or vice versa.

Hey as long as they want to eat cats, let em, as long as they don't do it here in this country, my bet PETA would be on them like flies on manure. Different cultures, yes I realize that. Just something as a cat person, as myself, I do not like to hear.

Now in Korea, dogs are considered fine to eat. My buddies and I traded a Korean man an MRE a piece for a meal one time. He came back with a dog that he skinned and cooked. It wasn't the best tasting, but it was better than another freeze dried meat cake.

My dog still gives me dirty looks whenever I call her though.... I think she knows

I'd eat possum before I'd eat cat. I'd have to be way hungry in either case. Aren't most Chinese cats full of parasites?

I am so lucky. I have a freezer full of beef from a steer I knew personally.

I like cats but I also like cows. Actually, I like cows better than cats and I eat them. I just want them treated well before slaughter and killed fast and humanely. Would I eat a cat? I guess if I was hungry enough and knew it had been treated well. Why would I though when I can eat a cow?

The reference was to PETA in regards to people eating cats, not beef.
