Cargil Black Onyx mineral

Does anybody on here use or have tried the Black mineral by Cargil. It is supposed to be designed for the AI and ET programs more than most minerals. I do know that it is $22.00 per bag here in NC .I appreciate any information.

I started useing it in the recieving barn.
Its hard to say for sure-- but I think its making a difference over other minerals that I have used.

I have been doing alot lately with getting extra minerals in the calves right at the start. And it is really making a difference in their health.
So I am thinking that the calves coming in ARE mineral deficient-- IF cow/calves are deficient the cheapest supplement(even at $22 a bag) is good minerals-- and from what I am seeing I think ALOT of NC cow/calf opperations are deficient.
Maybe cheap minerals are not good enough for fescue areas???????

I'm presuming that's the medicated Onyx however that's still a few dollars higher than I pay. I just bought the Gold, (or was it the green whichever one is high mag) medicated with IGR and it was $22.00 and I mix it half and half with the Onyx. I pay $19 for the Onyx medicated, $17 for unmedicated.

The girls really like it and I also buy a 10 lb bag of A,D, and E for $5 and add that to the mix.

I haven't AI'd anything, I use it because I think the lease bulls need it for the short period they come back on R&R and I give it to the cows for increased milk production as its higher in calcium/phosphorous

The onyx is only available here in the winter. Our cows eat it up quickly and I would probably continue it in the spring if I could.

I'm not very familiar with the Cargill minerals except they have a neat color scheme but it seems to be a little over simplified. You should not mix 2 different minerals such as high mag and fly control because you effectively now are feeding 1/2 enough mag and 1/2 enough IGR. You can find companies that will make a mineral that will fit all your needs for each season rather than you having to blend products on the farm at more competitive pricing than $22/bag.[/quote]

I know of someone that uses Cargill minerals that swears by them, he has the sorriest looking cattle that I have ever seen. Cattle are constantly sick. Feeds what is recommended on the bag.

All the mineral in the world isn't going to make a difference if the cows are not receiving adequate nutrition, and are not on an acceptable health program. For you to make this type of statement regarding this particular brand of mineral is misleading at the very least.

The question was asked and just giving feedback.

I really don't believe that that many people in Texas use Cargill minerals, they mainly buy other's that deal with what mineral the cattle are missing in there area. I know that I do.

Seems like Cargill minerals pretty popular, alot of people using them in TX.
