Why would someone rotate between MLV and killed vacines at each vaccination time?

I thought the same thing when our vet pointed out that you could switch back and forth. Guess some people buy whatever his on sale that week!!

There is such an advantage in the level and types of immunity the MLV stimulates over the killed, it is only advantageous to use killed in cases where vaccine integrity or pregnancy are a concern. I have heard rotating MLV brands, which may make a little sense, but not MLV and killed.

Would rotating catch more of the virus modifications? Virus modification produces new strains of the same viruses that is the reason why the human flu vaccine changes every year. Just a thought.

I have heard of people and even heard a vet one time talk about using killed before weaning and boosting with MLV after the calves are weaned and away from the cows. That is as close to alternating as I have heard of.

This is the only circumstance that I would ever recommend killed vaccines - and that's only if the cows had NOT recieved their MLV prior to breeding. As far as I'm concerned, killed vaccine is like pi$$ing in the wind.
