I am trying to get my cows to all calve close together, and since right now they calve between Feb. and August, I was wondering which most people prefer, fall or spring calves and why? Thanks

Where do you hail from?

Most people prefer spring born calves, but there has been several studies done on fall born calves that demonstrated the return on investment is much higher, even with added feed costs. Most people don't care to increase feed costs and in the spring you have a lot of forage. In the fall, you run the risk of running out of forage or it is too hot to calve.

Google 'fall calving season research' and I'm sure you will find a lot of information.

I prefer late Oct to early Dec. The calves are ready to go for those that like to buy a couple when the spring grass gets here. I have to plan on feeding them extra. AI can be a hassle in late Jan, early Feb though. But the great thing about this is you get to do it your way. kinda
