Calving Information For Beginners

(Warning: This is going to be a big post.)

Please remember that if in doubt, always call your veterinarian first - time is crucial when dealing with difficult presentations!
( *In no way, shape or form is this post meant as a substitute for qualified licenced veterinary assistance...these are simply guidelines with the intent to illustrate and inform.)

In the interest of the new folks, thought I'd see if I could copy and paste some info for you.

1. First here's a nice link for some guidelines.

2. And two very informative pdf links:

Proper placement of obstetric chains prevent injury to calves when applying traction if assisting delivery. Very important!

Take care.

Way to go Annie,

That is one good post!

Where did this board come from?????? I go away for just a day or so, and something new is added. I keep waiting for Macon to add a picture board.

Very interesting post! Thanks! Hope we do not need it for our two heifers first calves coming sometime SOON, but it is definitely something to know.

We always do the two loops with the chains, it's way easier on their legs than a single loop...it's also important to keep the chain aligned straight between them or you chance giving your calf a green fracture if the pull gets tough.

Take care.

How many of you do the half hitch when you hook up chains?

We never have, but it's certainly worth thinking about and implementing, I think.

Great post Annie, one of the best I've seen in awhile...thanks.
We start this week and only have one heifer that I'm worried about...always good to have the thought process sharpened and the OB kit stocked and ready.
