Wow, 13 of 19 on the ground in four weeks with just a few complications. First calf heifer had to have her calf pulled, he's a big boy, but doing great. Thanks are due to an experienced neighbor on hand to help with that. Three mamas had to be milked while the babies got their feet under them. All three were marked for sale last year after the same problem. We're getting the hang of identifying the issues early and handling them, we just need follow through. We now know to ALWAYS have colostrum on hand after I had to pound on the door of our local farm store that had closed but were cleaning up and beg for a bag. Registers were closed so I left my license as collateral that I would come back and pay! Patience has also been a lesson as I've overreacted :shock: to mamas to milk and babies that wouldn't take the bottle first rattle outta the box. Here's hoping the lessons learned with the remaining six and first 13 this season are taken to heart. I really do love it. Looking forward to 2015 as I continue to learn from the "gurus" on this site and locally. :cboy:

I appreciate what you are saying about having to milk three. I got two that had calves three weeks ago and the calves are still not using the milk. I worry about them getting mastitis. I had a cow in the chute yesterday that I thought had mastitis. I hand milked her down some and it was just nice clean milk. The calf is only using the front two teats. The back two teats were sealed and I was pretty sure they had mastitis. I was wrong. One of the things I see in these Simangus, some produce too much milk!
