If you're watching Superior today- the future doesn't look too rosy...
Altho they are selling southern cattle which are usually cheaper- I haven't seen anything weighing between 500- 650 go a $1.00....

Nice looking char cross steers weighing 650-- brought $.97-- some lots of lighter ones down in the $.90's and heifers in the $.80's.....

Another big bunch of nice looking Char cross steers out of Fla for end of August delivery- source verified- tagged- all natural- weighed 650--brought $88.50....Needless to say the buyer didn't sell...

Only thing I've seen go over $1.00 was some 450 weights...

Now I know Florida and southern states cattle are usually cheaper-- but this is plumb sick... :(

I don't know how- with the huge increase of input costs- these producers can make a go of it with prices like that :???: :( .....

I guess we don't have it so bad here, yet. 800-900 pound steers averaged 1.05 yesterday. 400-500 pounders averaged 1.19. I sold a few in the 550 to 600 range two weeks ago. The steers brought 1.11 and the heifers .97.

OT,

I watched this as well. But then their were several KS and OK groups sell, and they were end of Oct, first part of Nov delivery weighing around 650 lbs, and they were bringing around $1.10 or around $715

Yep- some of the northern cattle came back up-- Some all natural, black, October delivery 580 weight SD calves I saw go for $110.50-- some 610 weights- mixed colors for $1.09....
Some 450 lb mixed colors from Buffalo SD - were $116.50 (last year they'd have been closer to $1.50).....
Highest was some nice looking 710 wt blk weaned strs from Buffalo SD that brought $1.20....

Most were no saling them.....

Everything about $20+ off what they were this time last year....But with the uncertainty of fuel and corn prices we don't have any buyers out in the country offering contracts either like is usual...

I never thought there was that much of a discount for those southern calves  I don't know how they can make it on those prices :???:

well were slowly changing that with better genetics and management . if high output don't beat us down first. read a good article in the gulf coast cattleman pertaining to this very subject. of southern cattle......but have seen enough televised auctions to see theres a bigger difference in the cattle then some folks realize. as bad as i hate to admit it, some needed to be discounted. if nothing else but to encourge a change in their program

Southern cattle get discounted mostly because of the long trip to the feeders and packers in the Midwest.

I hope things turn back around to a localized economy once again like it was in the 60's. We had local feeders and packers then.

1200 miles is pretty expensive these days...And the trucks have to come back empty too.

Yep-- I'm sure the fuel prices are going to bite us in the shorts up here on the Canadian line too... Nearest feedlots are eastern SD and its quite a trip to the there and the Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa feedlot area....

I thought it was interesting how tight it is in the cow/calf segment- and that Independent feeders are and have been losing large amounts for sometime-
BUT
The latest beef packer margin index from HedgersEdge.com is at a plus $50.80 per head, compared with the previous index of $51.95.

Mike said it, it's the transportation costs. Butcher cow prices here are very high because of the short haul bill.

No doubt about the transport cost, thats a given.... but the artical i read was how southern cattle stack up againts the midwestern. things like, morbidity, wont gain , wont grade.. i think you may have touched on this awhile back.

There have been a couple of studies showing that southern cattle are very comparable to other regions' cattle in all facets. Some even show grading and gaining superiority. The negative was that brahma influenced cattle won't put on hair in the winter thus can't stand the cold as well.

I'll see if I can dig them up.

Definitely still some optimism and some money out there...I didn't make it to yesterdays sale at Glasgow Stockyards - but it sounds like the pairs were hot.....
What a little rain and green grass won't do...

1St Calf Heifer Pairs $1375/Pair
3 To 6 Year Old Pairs $1375-$1535/Pr.

Wow!! The pair market was on fire this week! A house full of buyers for 120 mostly young pairs. Even with high corn prices, and uncertainty for fall calf prices, there was a big demand for these young pairs. Thanks to everyone who came in to bid on this nice offering.
