Calf prices.....

I am weighing my options....butcher my 15 mo old bottle raised pet heifer (breed unknown...was told angus by farmer...looks angus...but has horns) or breed her to get next years butcher baby (or maybe it will be the year after that since she hasn't been bred yet and I'm still in the 'research' mode of this).

Anyone in the AZ/CA/NV area have knowledge of what a calf is going to cost me in the spring and where to get one? Mine came cross country as a gift from my hubby (I bought him a tractor so he brought me home a 3 week old calf when he brought home the tractor). Anyone going to have calfs for sale in the spring that isn't too much more than 8 hour drive or so from Kingman, AZ?

I have more info in the beginner section under "Questions about my year old heifer". Thanks...Traca

I would think driving 16 hrs. (8 both ways) to get a calf would cost more than the calf! Just go out and ask a local producer to sell you a calf come spring or summer. Buy one with some age on it instead of raising it.

Not around here....I don't even think we have a "local producer". Our only dairy farm just closed this past year and they are already grading it for housing. We are in the desert mountains....no farmland/pastures around here! I know there are a couple of herds, but I'm not sure how to contact them or what the going price even is. I know one aquaintance paid $300 for his young meat bull...they don't even castrate them for the buyer around here.....I'm still looking though so I may find an alternative that will suite our needs better.

My daughter turns 9 in a couple of weeks so she will be doing 4H this year...that might help us make some connections...but that doesn't do me much good when weighing my options for my current situation.....Thanks...Traca

Yes, I think we do (It's out of town a little ways I think)...but that doesn't answer my question as to what a calf is going to cost me in the spring!
