OK, smokey is just a diluted black animal. So basically what happened was that the sire didn't pass on the dilutor gene this time. You could breed her back to the same sire and have a 50/50 chance of having him pass on the dilutor gene next time.

If you bred her to a Char bull (white) then there should be a 100% chance of him passing on the dilutor gene, and providing that your cow is homozygous for the black gene you would get a smokey calf. If she is heterozygous you could get a tan or red calf from either bull. I hope that I am understandable ;-)

You could get a solid white calf from a Char. I get 'em all the time from Brangus (black) cows.

I believe randiliana is right. Got to be yellow under those circumstances.

Let me repeat. I don't know whether they are hetero or homo, but I sometimes get solid white calves from Black Brangus cows.

Not smokey. But solid white with gray noses. Very seldom will I get a pinknose out of the combo.

Not necessarily. We've bred purebred MG cows to a purebred MG bull and gotten red calves. Dad bred a purebred white heifer to a black angus bull last year and got a white calf this spring - there is no doubt as to who the father is, either.

It seems from my research that a red lim bred to a char will make a yellow calf. From what I understand randi has said that combo will never make a white calf.

I wasn't talking about Limi's, just about the possible color of the calves that can result from breeding a certain cow to a certain bull. There are no guarantees, even if it seems like a fairly cut and dried thing.

I would say bred to Charolais, your black cow will have either a white calf, or just a dusting of black.

Breed a black cow to a white (char) bull and you can get everything from white with a grey nose to smokey to charcoal to black. I am thinking that the grey skin means that it is a smokey (even if it's coat is white) and that the black is either a really deep grey or that the bull wasn't homozygous for the dilutor gene.
