Went to the maternity pen this morning to check . One new calf. Looked across the field and saw a bunch of buzzards on the ground. Young cow in a low spot and not being able to move. Calf half gone looked real close and the buzzards had eaten the rim on the outside of her vagina all the around every thing laying on the ground. Went to get the pistol l and when I got back she was dead. Loaded her on a trailer to take her to the woods, got tractor stuck. Nearly to much for this old man that tries to do by himself. Any one remember the song about "life gets tedious don't it." I am about there. Told the wife that I was going to take advantage of the high cow prices. What would it be like to have nothing to do. I think I will try it.

Sorry that happened to you.. Remember tomorrow is another day. If you have hobbies you always have something to do. I know alot of older guys taking advantage of high cattle to leave the business on a high note. I hope you make a decision after thinking about it a while and not just out of frustration from the moment.

Had to walk back to the truck for a pistol !! You need a shotgun in the truck, and a pistol in your pocket. You never know what you might walk up on. Hate to hear about the cow.

Sorry about the cow. Think on that quitting thing real hard before any drastic decisions.
I'm another old man going it alone. Gets a little tough some days.
Had one of my better cows give me a great looking bull calf the other week. Last chance for a bull calf out my old bull. I was real excited about him. Found the two of them laying together and she had flopped one front leg over him and smothered him. Took a couple days to get over that one. Some days I too, threaten to sell them all while prices are up.
Hang in there hurleyjd.

fitz

I too have considered if I should stay in. 3 colon surgeries in 9 months and now I think I might expand one more time before I quit. I am down to 72 head so that is just enough to be a problem. If we have a good hay season I guess I will just fill the barn back full and see what happens. If the barns are full I cant quit of course.

Agree! Anyone on a farm or ranch should, however, have a "holstered" handgun when out and about. Never know when you might need it.

Quick note, i think you can deduct that as a loss. Texas now views vulture kills as a loss.
I keep my heifers at the house where i can see them and be around them, the vultures still come and watch. I carry off every afterbirth and dump them in animal holes. We bury every animal that dies. This has helped keep the loss from vultures down. They are almost impossible to kill......

When i told the wife I was selling out a few years ago she said they are half mine.
She said you are not selling them all you will die if you don't have a cow to keep
your blood pressure up.
So I still have a few.
Now those devils is why I keep a 22 mag on the mule I keep a pistol on me as well.
Got on top of a 3ft timber rattler couple days ago in the yard. Shot him twice for scaring me.

Build a buzzard trap.
