Went out to feed this morning and Jip the blue Heeler started her alarm bark. When I looked up saw these black buzzards in the barn roof and then several more in trees and on the fence close to the road.
Wife had said she saw some kind of varmit killed on the road yesterday beside our driveway, so I reckon the buzzards found it early this morning.
Jip hates buzzards as much as we do, when she had her pups we had to watch whenever they were outside buzzards would swoop down low looking them over and Jip learned to watch the sky and try to chase them off.
We got them chased off, probably 10-12 of them.

Yes, would have been an easy one, but we are very close a heavy travelled state road, lots of neighbors, just don’t want to take a chance, and now especially with the for sale signs up people are looking this way.
 
Are those local birds that overwinter or are they birds from farther north moved south by the snow?? We mid Ill have had snow cover for 2 weeks. The vultures left about a week ago.

They are here in large numbers year round, I don’t know if more join them from further north over winter or not.

I agree wholeheartedly. They have pretty much completely pushed out the native red-headed ones. And unlike the red headed ones, they don't wait for the animal to die. I had a heifer get down trying to have a calf some years ago, and they found her before I did. They started eating underneath her tail. It was just about enough to make me sick to my stomach.

Same here, we see very few red headed ones now
 
I have not seen as many around here as there use to be. They clean up a lot of roadkill and dead animals but can be a problem chasing the cows to get the afterbirth. I have had a couple of calves stomped to death by mama cows trying to protect them from the buzzards trying to get the afterbirth. They needed thinning, but a lot of dead animals would just lay if not a few around. A few years ago, I seen as many a 50 following a cow around, but not since then.

If they would go after afterbirth on the ground, that’s one thing. They go after live animals. The red heads are the good ones.
 
Confirmed that a number of dead black headed buzzards found near a small stream... had the avian bird flu... H5N1 or some such number... in Franklin Co.... Have not found any of the true turkey buzzards with it... it was in the news a bit ago, samples taken and confirmed in the last day or 2... Doesn't hurt my feelings any...
