I would like to know how the process of buying Hereford semen and certificates work. Can someone(s) please fill in the blanks for me.

Let's say I buy semen on a bull from either a bull owner or an outfit like Reed.

I buy 10 straws of semen at $20 per straw, the certificates are $50 each.

Do I just pay the seller $200 plus shipping at the time of sale?

I assume I don't have to pay for the certificates up front just send in the $50 per certificate as registration papers are needed?

Do I get some kind of document with the semen to aquire a certificate when I need one?

What if I keep the semen for 15 yrs before using it or sell it, is the AHA involved in guaranteeing the certificate years down the road?

Thanks for any help you may be.

You buy the smen and use it. Every calve born will need a cert. You pay the 200 and shipping and then pay the 50 when the calves are registered. That is a great question on down the road. I used some Scotch Cap semen and got one. This semen was 15 YO.

alot of people go ahead and buy the certs at time of semen purchase.an the certs are generally sold 5 certs to 10 straws of semen.that way in 15yrs you still have a cert to reg a calf with.

I thought the AHA was talking about getting away from needing certs to register calves

It will depend on who you're dealing with & what kind of deal you work out. When I order from Reed's, they ship the semen out right away & then mail me a bill. If you're a new customer, they may want a credit card number or a check up front before they'll ship any semen. Call them & ask them.

The certificates do not have to be ordered at that time but will need to be purchased before calves can be registered. I usually just e-mail Jim or Linda (Reed) a couple of days before I'm ready to register calves & have them release any certs that I need to the AHA. They (Reed) will then bill me for the certificates.

Some semen sales are package deals......like so many straws of semen & so many certificates for a certain price. With these, you'll receive the certificates at the same time you purchase the semen.

As mentioned, the AHA has a new program now where breeders with a.i. bulls can choose to not require certificates for registration.

Dun and Alan,

Unfortunately there are only a handful of bulls out there right now that are available this way.

They listed all of them in an old issue of hereford world (about 6 months ago) and Reed dentoes the bulls he has in the program in his bull listings with a N/R under certificate costs.

Purchasing semen from a reputable bull owner is a pretty good guarantee you can get a cert. whenever you need it. I'm an ABS rep and there is no problem getting certificates for any bull that the records show being sold to an individule. Stick to a reputable source that you know will be around and don't worry too much.

Thanks all that pretty well sumed it up, I'm assuming there is no problem getting certificates on old semen?

No but there may be a difference in the type straw, or how the semen was frozen. Make sure you ask some questions and don't assume it is all the same.
