I currently have a 3930 New Holland tractor. It is a 44 hp PTO. I am wanting to round bale some hay. I have a small operation. 22 acres of pasture. I have a good vermeer rebel round baler located. And need a little more horse power to bale with it. I am looking at a 5303 Johndeer with a 55 hp PTO. Has anyone had any experience with a 5303 ? Also i am looking at a 4630 New Holland.

I have a 5300 JD that has given good service.I have had to replace the clutch twice in 4000 hours but we have used the tractor for some heavy duty loader work that it was not designed for. Mine is 50 hp I think, good power but not really heavy enough for pulling a heavy load. I have pulled a 640 NH round baler but it loaded the engine. Should be fine for a small operation.

Go With the John deere. All Around Better tractor Better Resale Vaule as well say in a cuple years you wanna sell it for a differnt tractor it will Bring Near What you paided for it.

them 5303 are a Good Tractor For a Guy with Cattle Very Simple not much Electric Stuff in them to go Wrong.

Pick the JD. ''Nothing Runs like a Deere''

Save your money and hire your baling done! It's far cheaper and you can put your time and money to a more constructive use.

The Rebel baler is rated for a 40 hp tractor. I would at least give the tractor a chance before I spend the kind of money you are talking about. As long as the field is flat, the hay is dry, and you're not running a race, the tractor might be all you need. If you feel you must trade up, the 4630 is a nice tractor, but then I'm allergic to green! :p

Stepper,

Two thoughts.

First of all, if the Rebel Baler you are looking at is a model 5400, Vermeer recommends only a minimum 40 HP tractor. So, you may very well be fine with your current tractor. If you are looking at the 5500 Rebel, that takes a 55HP tractor which means you may need to trade up.

Second, if you check the info on your New Holland 3930, I think you'll find it was probably manufactured by a company called Escort in India.

Escort now markets that virtually identical formerly New Holland 3930 in the US as a Farmtrac model 555. If you have been satisfied with your present tractor then you might check out the next size up from Farmtrac, the 52 PTO HP model 665. You'll find it quite similar to your current tractor (although the Farmtrac model is a platform tractor).

I've got the 65 PTO HP Farmtrac model 675 and have been quite satisfied. I find the Farmtrac line to be a good high quality tractor at an affordable price.

I've got a Rebel 5400 that I pull with a New Holland 65 which is very similar in size to a 3930. It pulls the Rebel with ease and has plenty of power to spare.

Stepper,
All the tractors mentioned are good tractors. I think you need to look at the transmissions of the tractors. The JD 5303 does not have a synchronized transmission. Yes you can bale with a JD5303 but your 3930 and a 4640 have a synchronized transmission. You need will never go back once you have a synchronized transmission.

We have sold over 600 new Vermeer Rebel balers and we have customers baling with less than 40 PTO HP. The baler new needs about 100 bales of use to slick the painted surfaces down and then you can crank the hydraulic pressure down if needed. The Rebel balers are usually set a 50% pressure for break-in purposes.

ironpeddler,

Some models of 5303 Johndeer tractors have syncronized transmission's. The 2003 & 2005 do. The 2004 model's have the collar shift.

Let me ask you something since you sell the rebel bailer's. How heavy of a bail can the 5400 bailer make ? And i have herd that the rebel bailers are not as good of a bailer as say the 504I models ? What is the difference ?

ironpeddler -
As long as you're answering Stepper's questions - here's mine - what kind of money does it take to own one ?
The whole thing of baling vs. buying hay has me crunching numbers right now.

OklaBrangusBreeder,

Thanks for the web address on that thread on rebel bailer's.

The 5400 Rebel baler has spring & hydraulic tension. Only a few 504 Super I balers had the $800 optional hydraulic assist installed. Both balers work the same but the Rebel has been updated with all the bells and whistles.
Currently we have some early order balers that we can sell for $12,800 but $13,000-$13,500 is the market here in East TN.

For the small operator this is often the best thing they can do is custom hire if available.
