Bush hog recommendations

I’m looking to purchase a new bush hog.
I want a 10’ or maybe a 12’ to pull behind a Powerstar 75.
What brands do you recommend?

I’ve currently got a 15’ rhino. Formerly had a 10’ rhino. Very satisfied with both. I know they make a 12’ batwing for smaller tractors that might be worth looking into

The name brands like Bush Hog, Woods, JD, Rhino, etc are all about the same. They all have lighter duty units and heavy duty units. It depends on what you are going to be doing with it.

With that said, we have a 10' straight deck Bush Hog with the big gear boxes that I have always liked. It been a good unit and is just right to get around things or do roads buy not so small you feel like you aren't getting any where.

Pick a size and budget and then go from there for 75hp a 10' would be about right maybe a 12' depending on useage. Most of the name brands like JD, Woods, Rhino, Etc are good, but there are some things to be cautious of like early JD MX mowers have weak gearboxes, Woods "intra drive" gearboxes us a rather costly proprietary slip-clutch setup, etc.

Personally I prefer the heaviest duty one i can afford as they just hold up better and can do everything the light duty ones can and more.

I like my John Deere RC6R…a little smaller that what your are looking for but it will do what I need it to do and more. I agree with the comment above. Get something that can handle a little more that what your are looking intend to use it for…better to have a little more capability than not enough.

Ironcraft has a brand new line of 10-12ft flex wing cutters. They also make straight back cutters. I have been very happy with my Ironcraft attachments. Ironcraft was formerly Titan attachments. depending on your ground.. if its rough you'll need a heavy duty unit like a schulte or JD

if its not bad, not a lot of rock and brush to mow.. then about anything should work.

I'd get a 12' flexwing if you can swing it. As for as brands It's hard to beat Bushhog but they are getting pricey.

I have a 12 feet Land Pride flex wing that 60 hp handles pretty good clipping pasture. For my use it works well. Your 75hp Powerstar will handle it well.

I have a Bushog 3008 and got to say it has been less than impressive. As soon as I find a Rhino TW96 I like it will get replaced. Also never had much luck with the older Woods machines. Rhino is my preference but Landpride and few others make decent cutters. I had a Kodiak which is a fairly cheap line but was a good mower. Gear boxes sat pretty low so it wasn’t a great fit behind my JD tractors but fit great behind my brothers Kubota on R4 tires.

I've got a Woods 15' batwing that has mowed a bazillion acres (was formally a mowing contractors) and other than the expensive slip clutches it's been a great piece of equipment.

Same here. I have a older 15' Woods that gets flat out abused. We had another 15' Bushhog that is good also and the 10' flat deck. No complaints on any of them.

How many acres are you cutting, and what kind of terrain? As others have said, a good built, heavy duty one will do fine for light pasture clipping, too.

I took need to get one bigger than 6 foot. I find myself clipping pasture with my 7 foot disk mower because its faster. Eventually im gonna tear it up pretty good.

Will a 70 horse tractor handle a 15 foot mower? Ive been watching marketplace for a while. Some good buys on used ones occasionally.

Im with Chevy, get as HD as ya can find.

I pull my 15' with 110-200hp and on 110hp it's aggravatingly slow compared to 200hp.

I guess in light material and slow travel speed 15' and 75hp could work. I'd look for a 10-12'.

HP of tractor and size of mower - there are more issues than just that.

Will the tractor hitch handle the tongue weight of the mower. Some utility tractors may have the hp to turn the blades, but not much strength in the hitch attachment.

Mowing dead weeds and grass or 2" diameter trees and 8 foot tall briars?

Mostly level ground or steep hills. Weight and stability of the tractor, center of gravity, number of driven wheels are important even if the hp is sufficient. Sliding down the hill with a mower is not good. Turning over can be deadly.

Speed of travel. If the mower is too wide, you might be able to pull it going very slow. Are you a patient person?

Important to have the mower adjusted correctly. Mower should be set so that the blade tip is lower to the ground at the front of the mower and higher at the back. Then, the mower does all the cutting at the front forward edge and then rises above and rides over the cut grass farther back. If the back is lower than the front, the blades are cutting each stem of grass multiple times since the blade height lowers in the back. Are the blades sharp or worn out like mine? Obvious effect on hp and fuel and wear on the blades.

Will a 75 hp tractor handle a 15' mower? Yes, but not very well and maybe not very safe.

A buddy of mine has a 100 hp New Holland Workmaster 120 that he pulls a 14' hydroswing mower conditioner. It pushes the tractor around just a bit in some heavy crops on flat ground. Or maybe I should have said it jerks the back end around just a bit.
