My favorite time of the year- bull sale season.. Good chance to visit with old friends and neighbors...
Here I am at the Eayrs Angus Ranch sale last Thursday... They are a 3rd generation angus outfit that has been in business since 1962- and besides being old friends and neighbors, run cattle much like we do-- using some good old proven maternal bloodlines that mirror ours (Wye, 707/6807, Cole Creek) and have enough confidence in their genetics to use many of their own raised bulls... I went to look at their grandsons of Cedar Ridge 1V and Black Cedar and wasn't disappointed... They breed in a 5 section multi-sire pasture and then DNA to identify sires... Monte said that when they DNAed they found that the E A R Cedar 1509 bull (Cole Creek Black Cedar X E A R Mc Erica 509- (mgs.- J MC Impact 3912)) outperformed all the other bulls by quite a degree...
Coincidentally- one of the co-owners of the original "Cedar" bull- C H Quantum 6247- Zane Panasuk of Centennial Ranch (bkrath on ACS) is in the front row (black pullover with glasses on his head)... A very knowledgeable man on the old bloodlines- and especially the Cedar Hills cattle...

Stephanie caught me visiting with the ladies prior to the start of the sale..

Bulls looked good- with most weighing around 950-1000 lbs and were in good shape to go right to work... This was the first bull to sell- an E A R Ridge 457 (Cole Creek Cedar Ridge 1V) son- that brought $4750...

Midway in the sale...This was lot 227- an E A R Cedar 1509 son that sold for $5000...

Two Montana "legends" from south of the Missouri showed up.... Brent McRae of Big Dry Angus (who has his bull sale here this Thursday) and former Bareback rider and Montana Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame NFR qualifier Colin Murnion.. Murnion was a volume buyer...

Bulls sold as commercial bulls..
49 bulls avg. $3709

Top bull was a E A R Ridge 722 sired bull (a Cole Creek Cedar Ridge 1V son) that sold for $6250.

Top 10 avg. $5125 (with the Cole Creek Cedar Ridge 1V and Black Cedar grandsons being the hottest demand)... Lot of folks attending this sale were looking for bulls that would work well on heifers..

Volume buyers:
Webb Livestock 6 bulls
Sally Austin 5 bulls

Today I attended the Big Dry Angus Ranch of Garfield County's 27th annual bull sale at the Glasgow Stockyards ... They had a nice turnout with a big crowd, many repeat buyers and several volume buyers...

The McRae family had a very good sale and sold 83 bulls for an average of $6630...

Top selling bull was BDAR Fat Cat B400 #18083484- a BDAR Fat Cat Z077 son which sold to Math Farms of Whitewater Mt. for $21,000...

Second high selling bull was BDAR Weigh Up B436 # 18086919 a son of Plattemere Weigh Up K360 that sold to Vermillion Ranch for $15,000...

6 more bulls sold for over $10,000 each..

Yesterday I attended the 27th North Country Performance to Profit angus bull sale at the Glasgow Stockyards.. Lee Humbert, Scobey MT was rejoined in the sale by his old partner Jim Fossum of Richland MT after Jim took a 4 year hiatus from the bull business..

I forgot to ask Lee what the average was when we were talking after the sale- but they sold around 57 yearling bulls for an average close to $4500...

The top selling bull was Lot 1 Humbert HD 4242 #17970057- a Basin HD 125X son out of Humbert Duchess 242 (a HA Program 7337 daughter) that sold for $8500...

Lee also sold 7 yearling heifers for an average right at $3000.. The top heifer was Humbert Anne 434 #17970013-- an S Chisum 9174 daughter out of Humbert Anne 838 (mgs. H A R Expectation 5322) that sold for $3300...
The sales barn was packed with a Charolais and composite sale following the Humbert/Fossum sale- altho most the buyers were there for the angus sale... The stands really emptied out when the angus were done selling...

Congratulations to Lee and Jim on a good sale!
