If I had to make a choice from the pictures, I think I would go with the red bull. I don't like the head on the black one, the red bull appears to have a better girth, flank, head, and overall appearance. Just my thoughts.

Sorry, LA, didn't see your post.

I was thinking longer, deeper ie. (black) or shorter, thicker ie.(red) I have read were people really like length and not so much butt were others like alot of round muscle and ++ ass. Is length were it is at or is ++ muscle what it is all about?

those are the weirdest looking Angus i have ever seen. i would find a different breeder.

S.R.R.-Back to Chapter 1, Paragraph 1. For what are the bull's to be used? Registered? Sires for replacement heifers? Terminal Feedlot feeders? What are the bull's production records, or the production records of their dams? What are their EPD's? What breed cows are they to be used for? What breed are the bulls - Limousin, Simmental, Gelpvieh, Irish Black, Red Angus? Before a reasonable answer can be given we need to know reasonable answers to the questions. Just considering them from a phenotypical point of view - they both look to be better than average - for breeding cows to obtain calves. But to IMPROVE a herd or OBTAIN a profitable product - we need to know the REASON for the mating. Phenotypically, I like the Red Bull's LOOKS (phenotype) better than the black's. But I would like to know what breed they are - and then judge them by their breed standards. Of course, we require a view from the REAR! Also.

WOW DOC!!! Going to take me a while to get all thoses ? typed out! I was thinking for use as a terminal sire and I was going for peoples thoughts on body type for what you would want your steers to look like when they go to the sale.

O yes. You were getting warm with the Irish Black. They are Welsh Blacks red one from Canada and the Black one from Wales.

That depends on what your cows look like, too. They are half of the steers you produce. I was using the 'Questions" as a form for making you THINK. Beef cattle breeding is a perplex - - Ah saay, Son - - is a perplexing process of propulsion perpetrating and propounding perpetual perfection for propitious perception!

Doc....,LOL!,

Now I understand why the process is so....uh...uh...miscombobulating. Thanks.

I did a bit more research and the black bull has been out on the land working while the red one has been kept closer to home and fed a bit extra. Now does that make any difference?

DOC you are a funny man (or women? )  Either way thank God raising cattle is not quite as complicating as all that!

Well S.R.R. you will be able to get some hard data on calves sired by the Red bull very soon. The owner lives about 15 miles from me and sent a group of his steers to a trial at an Ag college close to us.

The red bull is looking a lot better than the black in the photo. The loose in the black would be tightened up a bit with some flesh, but he still seems to lack a bit of muscle. Comments for terminal cross of course. Replacement side would need more than a picture to determine.

No. I am not a psychic or prophet. I can't in my head envision what a bull would look like IF he had been at the house living life easy. Likewise I can't really envision what another bull would look like IF he was out in a field working for the last sixty days. That is one of the limits of visual appraisal. Visual appraisal works best when comparing two animals in the same contemporary group. You start using it to compare a bull on a feedlot test versus a show bull versus a hairy grass developed bulls and you really are straining your visual evaluating skills. I have to say I still prefer the Red bull even though if both were in the same pasture THAT might make a difference.

S.R.R.- I am a man! At least that is what my wife has told me many, many times! And I am sure that my son's will agree with her. And raising Beef Cattle the PROPER way is not as easy as one might perceive. Anyone who think's it is not complicated is on a slippery slope. Better get a good grip.
