Stop giving him treats. If you are getting them to used to going into the pen just feed them as a group. what happens when you decided he has had enough treats for the day and he decides he wants more?????

I use a stick to keep the cattle out of my space. When I wean my replacement heifers carry my stick and my bucket. Always start with the least amount of poke or pop. Increase as needed... to a point. Nothing good will come out of beating any thing in to submission.

My opinion is, you will not break the bull of it. He has been doing that for too long. I really question the breeders experience even raising an animal like that to sell.

This past crop I had a heifer that was just naturaly tame from the day she was born. I have a strict no petting or any thing like that policy. Before I could get her to sale I was feeding the calves in the pen and sure enough she ran in to me. Had a feed sack on my shoulder and she bumped me from behind. I knew how she was... knew to watch for her... and it still happened.

I had 2 bulls that would run you over when trying to feed ,one an angus and the other a brahman, the angus was raised a pet and started getting outright mean.My cure is everything has to have a pecking order , thats what I call it , so anytime I have a bull or cow like that I cary a hotshot best tool made IF used right. I still have the angus stays about 15 foot distance away from me at all times.I know there will be someone on here that will not approve of the hotshot but my cattle all know what it is and are what I call hotshot broke I very seldom have to use it on a cow that i have had very long the buzz is all they have to hear

Theres ur answer right there. Either that or wack him over the nose with a stick pretty hard so he knows u mean business. I will tell you another thing that might work, that I know backs my bulls off when I use it, is some fly spray. I start squirtin that stuff around, and they back off real quick.

If I couldn;t walk around the bulls they would be in the freezer. Through the years all of our bulls have given us space, only thing that is irksom is you can;t walk behind them in the pasture. They keep turning to see what your doing back there. Maybe the electro ejaculator for the BSE has them leary of some one back there. If I walk towards a bull I expect him to give way. If crowded in a small area I want them to either ignore me or just stand there.

Don't ever trust a bull. I have tame cows for the most part and walk thru them all the time. I use a walking stick and if they get to close I just push them back with it. Sometimes if they don't back off like I want I will smack their nose with the stick. Do not feed and pet them at the same time, make them respect you and your space. But like I said do not trust a bull, and know where he's a all the time.

There is not a good way to explain this but there is a difference between "agressive" and "stand off'ish". :D I don't mind cattle that like to keep distance between you and them. As long as they pen and don't show agression they are actually my favorite. With my heifers I raise I walk circles around them, push them thru the pens, ect but never let them get in my space.

I fear cattle that are too tame more than agressive cattle because you can tell when an agressive cow or bull wants a piece of you. Tame ones bump you at night, push you in to other cattle, knock feed out of your hands, step on you... all the little got ya's that can be very dangerous.

There is no difference between a bull and a cow. Give them the same respect IMO.

Thanks Dun...have you ever had to "adjust" the behavior of your bulls to get them to give way to you?
My wife did with this young bull we have now. one time he was pushing the gate to get to the feeders (this was at weaning) she snapped his nose with her finger and that was it. She also taught him to stand back from the feeder until the feed is put in, if he doesn;t stand back he doesn;t get any feed. Don;t know how she did it, she taught him that while I was laid up a bit.
Obviously thos are some fierce fingers, that's how she got me house trained 40 plus years ago.

Let me ask another Bull question...do you guys walk around your bulls on a regular basis? I mean where they could get to you? I know this question sounds stupid...but I am trying to learn how to interact with the animals. Thanks for all the great suggestions...I did not come up around cattle...this has been a lifelong dream and books are only so good...the real thing is the real learning experience. I think a hotshot may be in the near future.

Yep. I'm with dun on this, if I couldnt walk around them, I woudnt have em around. I dont get up right next to them, I still keep a couple of steps distance, but I can easily walk around them.
