This might fall under one of those potentially silly (stupid) questions or not?

But anyways, I just loaned out our bull to a person that lives 1 mile away from us as the crow flies. We are not breeding for fall Born's so I loaned it to him.

Any chance the Bull will be obsessed with getting out and coming back to my place? You know if you dropped a cat or dog off a mile away they would be home in no time. Wondering if his built in radar would send him back home to his first loves?
 
Probably no more then a male dog or a tomcat would if you dropped them into the middle of a bunch of females in heat. For that matter not to many years ago.... Nevermind. :secret: Z

My worry would be the boy bringing home STD's.

I was worried about that also, He is one of only two people I would have let use him around here. I know he runs a top notch herd and hopped this would not be a problem. I know he runs a pretty closed herd.

But I do not know very much about STD's in cattle (or in humans for that matter thank God!) How much should I be worried about it, and any advice on protocol when he returns would be appreciated. There will be about a two month lapse in time before I use him after he is done with him.
 
First thing I would do if you haven't had him on regular vaccinations is put him through the chute and give him a Lepto shot and a modified live IBR,BVD,PI3. Repeat on the Lepto in about six weeks.This may be overkill but you can buy a whole lot of vaccine for the cost of not having any calves .If the herd is not on aprogram i would recommend you vaccinate with Lepto twice then annualy.From personal experiance I would not reccomend the comdo killed vacine mixed with the lepto.Always use the modified live shot when cows are open.
 
i loan my bull to my neighbors, they only have 2 or 3 cows it works very well for me. one joins me and the other is less than a mile away. my bull did get out from the one down the road and came home. after the cows were bred, first time that has happened. they get bored when they are done with business.the other neighbor my bull goes before his time :oops: !!
i am not that worried about STD's with these people
they don't use any other bulls, and i vaccinate every 6 months.
 
When breeding natural service - bull & cows should have Lepto & Vibrio shots. (First time Lepto needs a booster). Around here, it is advised to Lepto at least twice a year. Not sure what the req is on Vib -don't need with AI program.
If you have any concerns, bul can be tested for known problems for your area before you turn him out with your own cows.
 
I would not loan out any of my bulls mainly for fear of std's, but if I would hire one out I would load him on a trailer and drop him off even if it is the next door neigbour. Once a bull knows whats on the otherside of the fence and how to get there himself no fence in the world will stop him. Roaming definately isn't a good thing when it comes to bulls
 
i agree with caustic here....STD's would be my major worry. We did allow a breeder in our area to bring two cows over to put in with our bull, but they both had all vaccinations and a vet certificate. Lepto-harjo is a major worry....a lot of herds have it and regular vaccines do not treat for that one, other forms of lepto, yes, but not harjo type. we make sure we use a lepto-harjo vaccine every year.
