Bull or Steer

I have a small herd of cows and all the bulls that have been born on my place, I have made steers out of them except one (which is registered). I raise the steers to put in my freezer. The registered bull calf that I have I really don't know which way to go. Should I make a steer out of him or keep him and try to sell him as a registered bull? He was born on 5/7/11, he weighed 78 lbs. I am working on trying to post some pictures. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Phil

Keep in mind that less then 10% of the registered bulls born each year are of the quality that should be kept intact for breeding

What breed is this bull of yours?

What can you tell us about his dam and sire?

He is a Black Angus Bull (Registration # AAA 16998660). Sire is SAV Final Answer 0035 (AAA 13592905). Dam is RBAR Queen 8A34 (AAA 16911342).

Dunn - thanks for your reply. I really do not have a background in cattle and I really do appreciate people like you that will take the time to help people like me. So what I am asking everyone; would I make more money if I raised him and sold him as a registered bull or my plan was to take him to the vet this weekend and turn him into a steer. Thanks, Phil

As we used to say in the Field Trial business, pedigrees don;t run rabbits. What you need is an objective and honest outside opinion. You don;t want someone that will pee on your leg and claim that it's raining. Someone without an axe to grind that knows cattle and will be blunt is what's needed.

The pedigree sounds pretty solid but Dun is right in what he's telling you.

Post those pictures as soon as possible.

Tennesse,

Phil

Easy killer, he don't look much different than some sensitive fellers balancer crossbred!

You are pretty good at nailing other folks cattle. How about you start a thread of some of your bulls and a few of your cows and lets see if you have the goods or just the mouth. I know at least one fella from SA who would be happy to give you a proper assesment of your breeding skills!

BTW to disagree with you and Dun Good bulls are avging $3000 at virtually any purebred sale and a lot more at most, and folks are crying if they have to pay more. What do you suppose the price of bulls would do if we took your advice scrotum.

Hey 3way, got your pm and thanks for the encouraging words. A man puts his bull up and you say cut, well I have every right to call it as I see it. Your mutts don't look much better. Why should I post pics when your buddy Doc Harris owns no cows and his words are gospel?

One more thing cowboy, heed my last post about your SA friend. His sting has softened some but you will get backstabbed. Get off your knees and wipe your mouth! I bet you are a great guy but you sound so pathetic jocking that dousche. Grow a pair and shut down the fan club.

Scroote, hoping we can be buckaroos again someday........
