I have a couple people who want to use my bull on their heifers, and I need to know the basics about it. My bull just hit 18 months, is he ready for maybe 3-5 heifers? What is a good price for this (its other students heifer projects, dont want to charge too much)? How long do we put them together? What do I need to watch out for?

I need any info on the topic. The heifers have been AIed and didnt take, so they want to just use a bull. I just happened to have the bull.

An 18 month old bull is old enough to breed 10 to 12 head at "least". Take him to the vet and have him fertility tested so you know he can do his part. make sure his EPD's reflect a potential for good calving ease (Low BW, CED). You will only have to EPD's to go by since he is not proven, so if he is not a CE bull by EPD you take a chance with grain fed show heifers. The price is up to you. I do it free for FFA kids usually, and only charge them their feed (which they usually bring) and maybe the cost of a ludelyce shot if they want to stimulate heat. Bull rental can be from $100 to $200 a month (could be more). Just depends on the bull.... ;-)

If they don't use a breed patch (or CIDR's), then I would ludelyce all of them just prior to (one day), or the day the bull arrives. Watch the cattle and witness the breeding in the next few days. Mark the dates. Wait 18 to 21 more days and see if any get jumped again. If not they probably settled. Send them home (or go get your bull) Palp in 60 days to verify. Most times people will put a bull with the heifers for 60 days which "should" cover at least two heats.

We have bulls for lease out as well as for on site service. Our senior A.I. certified, dual registered black Longhorn Bull available for onsite service only or can buy his semen. For him, we charge minimum $50. to breed and $25. per female bred whichever is more. Plus, $1.50 per day cow or heifer boarding.

Our lease out bulls go for $250. a month minimum or $8. a day which ever is more. Only lease out to "approved" breeders with adequate fencing and facility.

All of our bulls have been semen tested.

I've heard that a breeding age bull (Over 14 months old) can pasture breed about 1 female per month of age, up to a maximum of about 25 to 35 females for mature bulls in one breeding season/bunch of females.

Charge 50 - 100 per month. Make sure that he has the same quality feed stuffs and life that you would give him.

If they gave the heifers that shot, would I be able to take him away after a day or so? I will be taking him to lots of show, so a month gone is not a possibility. If its just 2 or 3 heifers, how long would be required?
